Abstract
The diabetic foot syndrome is one of the major long-term complaints seen in patients suffering from diabetes mellitus. Since 2003, the working group of the German Diabetes Society for the diabetic foot has developed certain quality criteria for outpatient and hospital foot treatment facility centres and is currently updating these criteria. An extensive nationwide certification process has developed as a direct result of quality management efforts made for people suffering from diabetic foot syndrome. There are currently 132 outpatient and 70 clinical foot treatment facility centres which have been approved, but only for a limited period of time.
Essential elements of approval are the structural quality of the organization, active and passive visitation, cooperation agreements, as well as the consecutive follow-up treatment of patients. Results are presented from the evaluation period 2005–2007.
