Abstract
Gastrointestinal infections are a common problem for out-patient and in-patient clinical care. The spectrum ranges from mild nausea or dysphagia to dehydration due to severe diarrhea. In this case insufficient treatment can be fatal, especially in chronic or severe acute infections. In most cases the self-limiting courses rarely require further diagnostic approaches or therapy concepts apart from electrolyte substitution. In cases of prolonged courses, additional risk factors or organ complications, microbial, histopathological, endoscopic and imaging diagnostic procedures are available for diagnostics. Hygiene is extremely important for transmission control.
