Staging of gastric and esophageal cancers

Abstract

Endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound are the most accurate techniques for evaluating of local tumor spread of gastric and esophageal cancers. Both methods provide reliable staging of early and advanced tumors (accuracy approximately 80–90%). Radiological imaging, including transcutaneous ultrasound, computed tomography, and positron emission tomography is used to complete staging in advanced cases, mainly to detect distant metastases. Staging laparoscopy is clearly an important method for detecting peritoneal spread in gastric cancer.
