Abstract

Endoscopic examination of the colon and rectum is currently a routine method in gastroenterology. Since the introduction in the 1930s colonoscopy has significantly improved the diagnosis and therapy of diseases of the intestines. In recent years the further technical development of endoscopy has shown a rapid development, initially in the field of image acquisition and processing. The focus of development now concentrates on completely new invasive and non-invasive endoscopy techniques and associated adjuncts. In this review the current clinically relevant developments of these new colonoscopy systems will be presented.
