Industrial growth, economic development, consumerization, and urbanization have resulted into problems of environmental pollution. Environmental engineering is the integration of science and engineering principles to improve the natural environment, to provide healthy water, air, and land for human habitation and for other organisms and to remediate pollution sites. Similarly, energy is the source of economic growth. Energy consumption reflects the state of development of the country. Energy engineering is one of the recent engineering disciplines to emerge. It is increasingly seen as a major step forward in meeting carbon reduction targets. In the past two decades, the development in these fields yielded significant results beneficial for the development of humanity.

The International Conference on Energy and Environment (ICEE - 2021) dealt with various themes related to renewable energy, wastewater treatment, chemical and biochemical engineering, and energy and environmental sustainability using green technologies and industrial applications. More than 150 participants, comprising scientists, engineers, academicians and from various countries, participated and presented their research findings in ICEE 2021.

This special issue “Green Energy for Environmental Sustainability” focuses on recent advances of our understanding on various green energy technologies and developments and the utility of these toward our environment. The papers submitted and accepted for this special issue of Environmental Science and Pollution Research provide a broad discussion and demonstration of state-of-the-art in breakthrough technologies in the field of energy and environmental management. Thus, this special issue covers the original research and review involving experimental and numerical studies, recent developments, and novel and emerging technologies including biomass and biofuels, wind energy, solar, energy storage, microbial fuel cell, waste water treatment, and carbon capture. We believe that the readers will enjoy reading the scientific articles and will gain many new scientific impressions and insights, innovative ideas, and far-reaching thoughts. We are also looking forward to interacting with you in our future events.
