Abstract
Purpose
To describe and compare individual levels of sleeping time, Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA), physical activity (PA) days a week, Light PA (LPA), sedentary time (SED), health quality of life (HQOL) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) in adolescents according to the prevalence of healthy BMI and BMI in the cardiometabolic risk zone (CMRZ), adjusted by age and sex.
Methods
Sample: 230 boys and 240 girls aged 11–17 years. BMI was evaluated according to Projeto Esporte Brasil (PROESP-BR) criteria. The individual low and high levels of MVPA, PA days a week, LPA, sleeping time, SED, HQOL and WHtR were obtained considering as a high level an individual value above (+ 1) unity of standard deviation (Z-Score); a low level is below to a value of (− 1) Z-Score for each participant variable.
Results
Prevalence of BMI–CRMZ was 32.6% among boys and 39.6% among girls. Among adolescents with healthy BMI, the prevalence (%) of low individual levels of SED was 17.3% and of WHtR was 18%. The prevalence of high individual levels for healthy variables were: MVPA (12.7%), LPA (17%), HQOL (18%), sleeping time (10.3%) and PA days a week (27.3%). Adolescents with BMI–CMRZ presented different results; prevalence of low level of SED was 19.4%; WHtR was 1.8%; the prevalences of high individual levels were: MVPA (16.6%), LPA (12.4%), HQOL (12.9%), sleeping time (8.2%), PA days a week (19.3%).
Conclusions
The (%) of adolescents in CMRZ is high, greater than 30% for boys and girls. Adolescents with healthy BMI present better health measures of WHtR, LPA, HQOL, sleeping time, and PA days a week compared to adolescents in BMI–CMRZ. However, adolescents with BMI–CMRZ presented a higher occurrence of high individual levels of MVPA and low levels of SED than did adolescents with healthy BMI.
