Factoring Attention Price into Investment Decisions

This research note summarizes our findings about how common investor tools, such as technical analysis charting, can be used to study attention price in the digital economy (an economy based on digital computing technologies). The rapid growth of information causes short attention spans (Simon, Designing Organizations for an Information-Rich World, in Greenberger, Computer, Communications and the Public Interest, 1971). In a digital economy, attention is a scarce resource and, from the value creation perspective, of immense importance. This is especially true for unlisted (private) companies for whom sources of traditional financial performance metrics are uncertain or incomplete.

In the digital economy, three elements define the relationship between the human (supply and demand) and the machine: clarifying objectives, defining what should be optimized, and providing insights into the operational context.
