FieldsRank: The Network Value of the Firm

The paper uses the financial technology (FinTech) industry to introduce a novel way to study the digital economy using artificial intelligence. A portfolio is mapped as a field where cash flows are studied in relation to network flow dynamics and entropy-utility duality (information theory). FinTech is an economic industry composed of companies that use technology to make financial services more efficient (“What is FinTech?” Wharton FinTech, September 2014). The premise is that traffic patterns encode perceived value as expressed by user preferences. Such an approach can have strategic management applications, beyond the prospective case in valuation. If the goal and mechanics of value creation are understood first, utility naturally follows. Backward anticipation suggests that the ability to visualise the playing field requires two steps: find the desired type of growth, and engineer the firm that way.
