Abstract

Polymeric bifunctional heterogeneous catalyst, Amberlyst™ CH28 resin, enables low temperature (<140 °C) synthesis of 4-methyl-2-pentanone (MIBK). A single pot multireaction process achieved high yields (<65%) and selectivity (>90%) in batch and continuous processes. New Pd impregnated strong acid styrenic ion exchange resins were tested and a good statistical correlation of secondary products and MIBK yield was found. GC–MS and GC methods were used to identify reaction products.
