Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Aims and scope

The results of a numerical evaluation of the stress-strain state of a RVS-20000 tank in the presence of nonuniform settlement of the outer perimeter of the tank bottom are examined. Relations between the length of a sector of the nonuniform settlement zone and the maximum value of the vertical component of the settlement that characterize the structural stiffness of the tank are obtained. The regions where the limit states arise are determined.

In Memory of P. A. Konovalov

This article is a further elaboration of work on an important problem of the construction of foundations for large steel tanks for storing oil and petroleum products on weak water-saturated foundations. Such storage tanks form a special class of structures with essentially no analogs. One author of this work is P.A. Konovalov − Professor and Doctor of Technical Sciences, Honored Scientist of Russia, Laureate of the USSR State Prize, Prize of the USSR Council of Ministers of the USSR and Uzbekistan − who made an enormous contribution to the development of the theory and practice of the calculation of the construction and operation of large storage tanks. He authored more 250 publications and 17 inventions pertaining to the problems of construction on weak soils. The authors dedicate the present article to the blessed memory of a great scientist, talented scientific leader, sincere individual, and a wonderful friend.
