FROM THE EDITORIAL OFFICE

The annual Gersevanov lectures, which are devoted to laboratory and field methods of soil investigations, was convened in April 2009. The following special lectures were read within the framework of the readings: Dr. Tom Lunne (Norway) − Recovery of specimens and laboratory tests of soft clays for acquisition of design parameters; Dr. John Powell (Great Britain − probing and geotechnical practice; Roger Frank (France) −Foundation design based on data derived from Menard pressiometer tests (MPT); Yu. K. Zaretskii (Russia) − Some problems of noncohesive-soil mechanics; Ter-Martirosyan (Russia) − Bed soils of high-rise buildings; and, E. N. Bellendir (Russia) − field and laboratory methods of soil investigations. In this issue of the journal, we are commencing publication of reading materials from a paper submitted by Z. G. Ter-Martirosyan.
