Causes of the loosening and failure of soils beneath plates

Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Aims and scope

S. S. Vyalov's's idea that microcrack development is the cause of the loosening of soils is used. Results of computational determination of the moment of initiation and development of microcracks in frozen sandy and cohesive soils in the beds of rigid cylindrical plates are presented. A comparison is made with data derived from experimental investigations. It is established by calculations that plastic shears and microcracks created by ultimate tensile stresses are the cause of widespread loosening and failure of sandy beds beneath plates.
