Plane problem of a footing on an elastic bed with consideration of its installation

Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Aims and scope

Abstract

The plane problem of contact stresses and the shape of the contact surface of an absolutely rigid footing, which is formed by load application and subsequent addition of its new portions along the surface, and which is being expanded following hardening of the surface that has been formed in the elastic bed, is discussed. Qualitative differences are established between the distribution of contact stresses and the distribution determined for the traditional static statement. This is integrally expressed in the fact that the bending moments have the opposite sign.
