Estimation of Micro- and Nanohardness of the Thin Film of a Coated Material Measured Using Spherical-Tip Indentation

  • Published:
Russian Physics Journal Aims and scope

The potential in assessing the hardness of the thin film of a coated material using indentation tests has drawn much attention, since this method is vital for predicting its performance characteristics. Modeling is used to investigate the spherical indentation tests with emphasis on the influence of the coating thickness on the composite hardness. An expression for the hardness of the thin film of the coated material has been obtained by geometrical and mathematical modeling of the imprint size of the monolayer coating on the film and substrate using spherical-tip indentation. The expression for the hardness of the thin film of the coated material is theoretically studied together with surface modeling, indentation depth, and size effect of indentation tests on the thin film and the coated system.
