Formation of a Negative Streamer in a Sharply Nonuniform Electric Field and the Time of Generation of Runaway Electrons

  • Published:
Russian Physics Journal Aims and scope

The formation of a negative streamer in air is investigated at different pressures in a sharply nonuniform electric field under the conditions of nanosecond and subnanosecond breakdowns. The investigations are performed with a four-channel ICCD-camera and an ultrafast streak-camera. In a separate series of experiments, the generation of runaway electrons is investigated in the course of streamer formation by measuring the dynamic displacement current. It is shown that the streamer velocity changes during its motion from the electrode with a small curvature radius towards the opposite flat electrode. The data are obtained on the instantaneous streamer velocity. It is shown that runaway electrons are generated at the start of the streamer.
