Abstract
New and insoluble poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) copolymer containing β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) side chain residues were prepared using a quaternization method. For this purpose, we successfully realised cyclodextrin tosylation. Then, the copolymer was obtained by side chain quaternization leading to the tosyl group liberation as an organic anion. The copolymer was then cross-linked in order to realize the adsorbent system. The obtained copolymer was characterised using 1HNMR and FTIR spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis and elementary analysis techniques. The average molecular weight of the used P4VP is close to 64,000 g/mol and was determined by capillary viscosity technique. The interactions of copolymer/para-nitrophenol (pNP) were studied. pNP is considered as a model molecule. In fact, the aim of this work is also to consider a potential application of this copolymer, a specific material, as retenting agent or in the controlled release of organic molecules. For this purpose, the equilibria adsorption was established. Retention interactions were conducted at pH 5. High retention efficiency was observed with the prepared copolymer, knowing that the poly(4-vinylpyridine) homopolymer does not interact with the pNP. The present study describes the synthesis and the characterization of the copolymer and shows interesting interactions using inclusion complex [β-CD/pNP].
