Corrosion inhibition of mild steel in acidic medium by butyl alcohol

Abstract

The corrosive behavior of mild steel in 1 M H2SO4 solutions contaminated with 3.5 % recrystallized sodium chloride at specific concentrations of butyl alcohol was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization and weight loss technique. The results obtained showed butyl alcohol to be an efficient inhibitor in the acid environment with general decrease in corrosion rate as the concentration of the alcohol increases. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the mild steel obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption deduced reveal a mixed interaction with the steel surface and spontaneous adsorption of butyl alcohol.
