Hard and soft generation regimes in a backward-wave oscillator

Using the simplest klystron-type model of the interaction between an electron beam and an electromagnetic field, we analyze realization of the soft and hard regimes of excitation of self-oscillations in a backward-wave oscillator. It is shown that the character of the operation regime is determined by a function which describes the dependence of the spatial shift of electrons in the beam on their energy. The relationships are found which allow one to determine the parametric boundary between the soft and hard operation regimes for devices with various initial particle energies.
