Abstract

Many years ago Ivan Nikitich Frantsevich foresaw and founded the most important trends of contemporary materials science as the union of science and technology. The successful development of these trends by Franstevich's scientists is currently abundant evidence of his genial sagacity, deep and undoubted erudition, and encyclopaedic knowledge. The article begins with a short history of the department founded and led by Frantsevich through the inevitable transformation until he died.
