The flavonoids quercetin and spireoside (quercetin 4′-O-β-D-glucopyranoside) were isolated for the first time from fruit of meadowsweet [Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim.] and identified using UV spectrophotometry, NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and acid hydrolysis. The isolated flavonoids and the thick extract of meadowsweet fruit possessed pronounced antidepressant activity according to the Despair test.
