It is a pleasure to write my first editorial as Editor-in-Chief of Optimization and Engineering (OPTE). As a multidisciplinary journal, OPTE supports the exchange of ideas between the engineering and mathematical optimization communities. The mission of OPTE is to promote the application of optimization methods in engineering and to encourage the development of advanced optimization techniques to solve important engineering problems.

I am honored to have the opportunity to guide OPTE as it continues to fulfill its mission at the interface of our two communities of researchers. I am particularly keen to ensure that all manuscripts are assessed using the scientific standards of both communities. For this reason, OPTE will continue its distinctive review process in which each paper is assigned to two associate editors, one from each discipline. Each editor independently requests expert evaluations and makes a recommendation. This process ensures that all the published papers are relevant to both communities.

I thank Springer for renewing its support of OPTE as it begins its fourteenth year of publication. Thanks to the excellent leadership of Tamás Terlaky who launched the journal in 2000, OPTE is now well established as a communication channel between the mathematical and engineering optimization communities. I am delighted that Tamás has agreed to remain on the editorial board as Founding Editor-in-Chief. I thank Tamás, the past and present members of the editorial board, the authors, the reviewers, and the readers of OPTE for making the journal so successful to date. I welcome your comments on any aspect of OPTE and will take all your suggestions into consideration. Your continuing support of our journal is vital to further increase its stature and visibility. Therefore I urge you to submit, and to strongly encourage your colleagues to submit, high-quality papers on any aspect of the exciting research at the interface of optimization and engineering.

I am confident that OPTE has a bright future, and I look forward to working with all of you to help OPTE continue to build and strengthen the fruitful interaction between researchers in mathematical optimization and engineering sciences.
