Abstract
Because of a number of common concerns and expressions, it is possible to read The Storyteller (1987) as a novel where Mario Vargas Llosa prepares the ideas for his essay Archaic Utopia: José Maria Arguedas and the Fictions of Indigenism (1996) In its turn, this connection suggests a second intertexual relationship, between Deep Rivers (1958) and The Storyteller. This article uses the interpretative clues in the essay to uncover the resemblances between the two novels. The characters, Ernesto and Antero, alias Markask'a in Deep Rivers and Achaic Utopia and, on the other hand, the first person narrator and Saúl Zuratas alias Mascarita in The Storyteller, serve as a starting point for the analysis. Next, an study of the titles reveals a remarkable intertitular game. While this may not confirm the hypothesis of a deliberate intertextual relationship, it at least attests to its plausibility.
