Abstract
Texts and melodies of medieval German songwriters have come down to us in manuscripts from the 10th century onwards. Nevertheless, the transmission of an art form originally conceived as oral was not homogeneous. On the contrary, three separate phases can be identified, which each developed characteristic types of notation. On the basis of significant examples, the article gives an account of these stages.
