This special issue of Multimedia Tools and Applications contains selected papers from the 23rd International Conference on Multimedia Modeling (MMM 2017), which was held in Reykjavík, Iceland, on January 4–6, 2017. The conference was attended by around 150 participants from all over the world, with an interest in multimedia modeling and analytics.

Four papers from MMM 2017 have been selected for publication in this special issue. These papers were revised by their authors and went through a regular review process.
