Quantitative information on damage processes obtained in acoustic-emission measurements

  • Published:
Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

A study is made of the effects of AE recording apparatus bandwidth and pulse overlap arising from the high counting rates, reverberation of elastic waves in the specimen, and quantitative data obtained on failure. Necessary conditions are given for which acoustic emission should quantitatively characterize failure characteristics. Examples are considered of quantitative AE measurements in corrosion failure of copper and hydrogen embrittlement of high-tensile steel of type 40Kh2GMF, where there is scaling of the failure processes.
