Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

The effect of the initial structure of carbon steels 45 and U8 on the degree of homogeneity of martensite formed due to electron-beam hardening at atmospheric pressure is studied. Metallographic and electron microscope analyses of the structure of the steels are performed. The microhardness is measured over the thickness of the hardened layer. Recommendations are given on creation of a homogeneous martensite layer by electron-beam treatment.
