About retrograde solidus and stratification of melt in the Fe–Cu and Fe–Cu–C systems

Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

Known experimental data on the Fe – Cu system are used for analyzing the interrelation between the retrograde nature of solidus and the form of the liquidus line. It is shown that this relation depends considerably on the change in the solvent element in the iron-copper melt. The nature and some thermodynamic parameters of the melt are determined and its susceptibility to stratification is analyzed. The effects of carbon and of other elements differently influencing the thermodynamic activity of copper and the retrograde behavior of the solidus line and on the solubility of copper in the crystallizing γ-phase are estimated with allowance for the change in the solvent element.
