Measurement Techniques Aims and scope

The problem of the precise calculation of the phase differential of radar signals of receiving phased antenna arrays is examined. An overview is provided of various methods for determining the phase differential: a method based on comparing a received signal with a heterodyne signal, as well as a method using a radio-photon analog-to-digital converter of the output signal of a receiving phased antenna array. A method of determining the phase differential, and a radio-photon device from which the shortcomings of the methods featured above have been removed, are proposed. The proposed method makes it possible to calculate the phase differential of radar signals at the output of the electro-optical modulator and the output signal of the photodetector, taking account of the known values of the amplitudes and phase differential of super high-frequency signals at the input of the receiving devices of the phased antenna array. In contrast with known analogs, a radio-photon device implementing the proposed method contains two parallel-switched electro-optical the modulators. built according to the design of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. It is shown that such a radio-photon device ensures high precision of the determination of a phase differential of radar signals in comparison with existing analogs. The results of experimental studies of the proposed method and the radio-photon device are analyzed. It has been established, from the results of the experiment that was conducted that the phase differential values vary according to the linear law, and it reaches a maximum value of π. In addition, the product of the amplitudes of the optical signals at the input of the photon-electronic unit is directly proportional to the phase differential, and is inversely proportion to the ratio of the amplitudes of the output signals of adjacent receiving devices of the phased antenna array. Keywords: radio-photon device, phased antenna array, phase, amplitude, radar signal, electro-optical modulator, Mach–Zehnder interferometer.
