Additional information

May 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of B. M. Stepanov, the well-known scientist and science management expert, creator of new scientific research areas in physics, and the founder and first director of the All-Russia Research Institute of Optophysical Measurements (VNIIOFI). The members of one of the leading metrological institutes of Russia have carefully maintained and augmented the legacy of Stepanov. The present selection of articles by specialists of the VNIIOFI is devoted to this event in the history of the Institute. The research reported in these articles develop ideas and scientific principles that were first laid down by the Institute’s first director.

The studies are collected in issue No. 7 of the journal Izmeritel’naya Tekhnika (first part of collection) and issue No. 8 of this journal for 2010, and in the present issue of Metrologiya, which offers articles on more specialized but no less important topics of modern laser research.

Translated from Metrologiya, No. 7, pp. 3–19, July, 2010.
