Abstract
Eliminating or signicantly reducing axial segregation in continuous-cast semifinished products (CCS) used to make slabs 40–150 mm thick is an important problem, since it makes it possible to attain good mechanical properties and achieve a high degree of continuity in the finished rolled product. This article analyzes the results of studies performed on a continuous caster in the converter shop at the Azovstal' Metallurgical Combine. A continuous-casting technology which employs consumable cooling elements in the form of steel strip is proposed for use. The article reports on an extensive study of structure formation in the CCS for different parameters of the production process. The conditions under which the steel strip can be efficiently introduced into the melt are also determined.
