Notes

  1. Oral history collection and historical studies do not require IRB review at Brown University as this type of work is not defined as generalizable “research.” All participants instead provided oral consent to participate in the project according to the norms of oral history projects, and the parents of those under 18 also consented to their children’s participation. A few participants also separately chose to join the Pandemic Journaling Project so that they could share their materials there. Those students separately followed PJP’s IRB-approved consent procedures to provide additional consent for their participation in PJP.

  2. Sometimes they addressed their letters to Madison, a Brown University research assistant who was receiving and organizing the files.
