The inhibiting ability of a natural polysaccharide, namely, gum arabic regarded as an environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitor, is investigated by electrochemical methods. The corrosion resistance of 09G2S steel is studied by the method of potentiodynamic polarization in a 0.1% NaCl solution with additions of gum arabic. It is shown that this inhibitor enables us to reduce corrosion currents and is maximally efficient at a concentration of 2 g/liter. We show that the results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are consistent with the data of polarization measurements. By using the scanning electron microscopy method and the EDX analysis, we investigate the surface of 09G2S steel and determine its chemical composition. It is shown that the carbon and oxygen contents on the surface of 09G2S steel after holding in the inhibited solution increase due to the elevation of the concentration of gum arabic, which enhances its anticorrosion action as a corrosion inhibitor.
