Influence of Operating Media on the Fatigue Fracture of Steels for Elements of Agricultural Machines

  • Published:
Materials Science Aims and scope

It is shown that the saturated solutions of chemical fertilizers decrease the fatigue resistance of St.20 and St.3 steels for all levels of loads. In this case, the fatigue limits become 2.2 and 2.5 times lower (as compared with air) for ammonium sulfate and nitrophoska, respectively. Based on the results of fractographic investigations, it is shown that this effect is caused by the weakening of grain boundaries and interfaces under the action of the indicated aggressive working media.
