The author, Professor Jean-Emile Morel has had a distinguished career in French Biophysics following training in Physics, Mathematics and Physical Chemistry at Ecole Centrale and Université Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris where he became Professor of Bioengineering, Biophysics and Cell Physiology for 25 years until retirement in 2004. Jean-Emile Morel was also a researcher in the Department of Life Sciences at the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique, Saclay and in 1993 founded the Laboratory of Biology at the Ecole Centrale de Paris where he remained its director until 2004. Most of Professor Morel’s scientific interests centred on the mechanism of muscle contraction. He produced a number of experimental and theoretical papers which generally did not fit easily with the prevailing views. His interpretation of his own data and that of others challenged the dogmas and in some cases caused difficulties in getting his views into the scientific literature.
