Sol–gel research in Italy

Abstract

A short story of the research on sol–gel in Italy is given, and the evolution is presented and compared with the rest of the world in terms of number of publications, citations and patents. It is shown that both basic and applied research are active and effective in Italy.

  1. From 1980 to 1986 only those papers related to the alkoxide sol–gel route were counted. This was not done for the years after 1986, but the amount of “spurious” papers (i.e., sol–gel in polymers) is not such to affect significatively the overall result.

  2. The research was done using Scopus. Although particular attention was put to avoid mistakes, the author apologize for any possible erroneous data.
