Effects of efficiency correlations and intensity uncertainties on interference correction for gamma spectrometry

Abstract

The magnitude of the correlations between data points in efficiency calibration for gamma spectrometry affects the uncertainty from the efficiency calibration. Using a new efficiency calibration algorithm in Genie 2000 we have explored how different assumptions on the correlations for a source-based efficiency calibration influence the relative uncertainty of the calibration. The activity uncertainty calculation in Genie 2000 for interfering radionuclides has been improved to account for correlations from the efficiency calibration and uncertainties in the intensity of the radionuclides. This results in larger relative uncertainties for radionuclides with multiple gamma emissions or large relative intensity uncertainties for the main gamma emissions, and for radionuclides that interfere with gamma emissions from other radionuclides that have large relative intensity uncertainty for the interfering gamma emission.
