Abstract

Single pot processing for Poly(vinyl acetate-co-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride) and Poly(vinyl acetate-co-[vinylbenzyl]trimethylammonium chloride) diblock copolymers bearing covalently bonded quaternized ammonium groups has been accomplished via RAFT polymerization, sequentially employing cyanomethylmethyl(phenyl) carbamodithioate chain transfer agent. Manifold-spectroscopic assessment affirmed their triumphant formation with confinement of ‘dithiocarbamate’ fraction of RAFT agent. Thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric analyses explored their thermal strengths and semi crystallinity. Owing to higher intrinsic viscosity, Poly(vinyl acetate-co-[vinylbenzyl]trimethylammonium chloride) exhibited lower ionic conductivity imputable to dilute cross-linking. Additionally, in vitro screening applying disc-diffusion and broth-dilution methods against three Gram negative (P. aeruginosa, E. coli and S. typhi) & two Gram positive (B. subtilis and S. aureus) bacteria unmasked their cogent antibacterial activity.
