Defluoridation of Post Treated Photovoltaic Wastewater Using Aluminum Electrodes: Optimization of Operating Parameters and Sludge Characteristics

Abstract

In the present work, electrocoagulation process has been used to treat fluoride containing synthetic photovoltaic wastewater wastewater (30 mg·L−1·F at pH 7 in 500 mg·L−1 NaCl, current density of 18.51 A·m−2, and distance between electrodes of 1 cm) using aluminum electrodes. According to the obtained experimental results, fast and effective defluoridation of the treated wastewater occurred in only a few minutes of electrocoagulation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses were performed to confirm the presence of fluoride in the sludge. The present electrocoagulation process is able to reduce the fluoride concentration below 15 mg·L−1, which is maximum contaminant level of these elements in wastewater according to Algerian norms.
