Abstract

Two new complexes [Co2(bia)2(2,2′-bpy)2] (1) and [Dy4(bia)6(2,2′-bpy)2(H2O)2]·8H2O (2) (H2bia = cis-1,3-dibenzyl-2-imidazolidone-4,5-dicarboxylic acid, 2,2′-bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) have been synthesized by method of hydrothermal reactions and their crystal structures determined. In 1, two symmetrical Co atoms are connected through bia ligands forming a discrete rhomboid binuclear Co2 cluster. Complex 2 has a one-dimensional chain structure based on binuclear paddle-wheel Dy2 and rhomboid Dy2 units. The structure versatility indicates that the nature of the metal ion and variable conformations of bia ligand play a crucial role in modulating the cluster complexes. IR, elemental analysis and XRPD confirmed the phase purity of the bulk materials. Magnetic properties of 1 and 2 in the 300–2 K have been discussed.
