A study on NLO, ultraviolet transparency, photoconductivity, and dielectric response of organic single crystal

Abstract

In this work, hydroxyethylammonium-l-tartrate monohydrate (HALT) was synthesized and developed as bulk single crystals by conventional slow evaporation method along \(\left(0\overline{1 }1\right)\) plane (a-axis). The structure of the grown crystal was confirmed by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The grown crystal belongs to monoclinic crystal system with P21 space group. Further, the presence of different functional groups in the compound was confirmed by FTIR analysis. The optical properties of conventional and uniaxial grown crystal were studied by UV visible spectrum which shows the lower cutoff wavelength around 230 nm. The second harmonic generation efficiency of the HALT crystal was found to be 0.78 times of reference material KDP. Laser damage threshold energy of uniaxial and conventional grown crystal were 300 mJ and 290 mJ, respectively. The mechanical strength of grown crystal was studied by Vicker’s microhardness analysis using nanoindentation technique. Dielectric properties of uniaxial and conventional grown crystal were studied for the frequency region 10 µHz–5 MHz. The grown HALT crystals possess positive photo conducting nature.
