Abstract

Two tetranuclear Ni(II) clusters, [Ni(L1)(µ3-OCH3)(CH3OH)]4·5CH3OH (1) and [Ni(L2)(µ3-OCH3)(CH3OH)]4 (2) (HL1 = methyl 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoate; HL2 = 4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenyl salicylate) were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography and magnetic properties. Both complexes have [Ni4O4] cubane cores assembled with four triply-bridged methoxy oxygens. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibilities for 1 and 2 show ferromagnetic interactions between Ni(II) ions. The best fit parameters for their magnetic behaviors are J1 = + 9.32 cm−1, J2 = − 1.66 cm−1 and g = 2.24 for 1, and J1 = + 9.82 cm−1, J2 = − 1.98 cm−1, g = 2.21 for 2, respectively.
