Silica gel glasses obtained by vitrification in air or an H2:Ar gas mixture of xerogels doped with Sm, Al, and Ba were studied. Impurity hexagonal and tetragonal SiO2 crystallites and tetragonal SmSi2 crystallites could form during the synthesis. Sm was incorporated into the glass simultaneously in oxidation states 3+ and 2+ if reducing synthetic conditions were used. Sensitization of Sm2+ luminescence by Sm3+ ions was rather efficient in Sm–Alcontaining glasses and did not occur in Sm–Al–Ba-containing glasses because Sm2+ ions were located mainly in the Ba2+-ion glass sublattice. The energy states of Sm2+ and Sm3+ in these glasses were calculated using the obtained spectra.
