We have used a laser deposition method to obtain films of the ternary compound CuGa5Se8. We have studied their composition and structure. We have established that both the crystals and the films of the indicated compound crystallize in a defect-containing chalcopyrite structure. We have determined the energy and nature of the optical transitions from the transmission spectra in the region of the intrinsic absorption edge. We have calculated the valence-band crystal-field (ΔCF) and spin–orbit (ΔSO) splitting energies according to Hopfield’s quasicubic model for the ternary compound CuGa5Se8.
