Abstract
We present a unified approach to various examples of Markov dynamics on partitions studied by Borodin, Olshanski, Fulman, and the author. Our technique generalizes Kerov’s operators which first appeared in Okounkov (Random Matrix Models and Their Applications, pp. 407–420, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2001), and also stems from the study of duality of graded graphs in Fomin (J. Algebr. Comb., 3(4):357–404, 1994).
Our main object is a countable branching graph carrying an \(\mathfrak {sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-module of a special kind. Using this structure, we introduce distinguished probability measures on the floors of the graph, and define two related types of Markov dynamics associated with these measures. We study spectral properties of the dynamics, and our main result is the explicit description of eigenfunctions of the Markov generator of one of the processes.
For the Young graph our approach reconstructs the z-measures on partitions and the associated dynamics studied by Borodin and Olshanski (Probab. Theory Relat. Fields, 135(1):84–152, 2006; Probab. Theory Relat. Fields, 144(1):281–318, 2009). The generator of the jump dynamics on the Young graph corresponding to the z-measures is diagonal in the basis of the Meixner symmetric functions introduced recently by Olshanski (Zap. Nauč. Semin. POMI, 378:81–100, 230, 2010; Laguerre and Meixner orthogonal bases in the algebra of symmetric functions, 2011). We give new proofs to some of the results of these two papers. Other graphs to which our technique is applicable include the Pascal triangle, the Kingman graph (with the two-parameter Poisson–Dirichlet measures), the Schur graph and the general Young graph with Jack edge multiplicities.

1 Introduction
The study of branching graphs is interesting from the point of view of algebraic combinatorics, representation theory and probability. The basic example of a branching graph is the celebrated Young graph \(\mathbb{Y}=\bigsqcup_{n=0}^{\infty}\mathbb{Y}_{n}\) which is the lattice of integer partitionsFootnote 1 ordered by inclusion (here \(\mathbb{Y}_{n}\) is the set of all partitions of n). The general definition of a branching graph is given below in Sect. 2, and in the Introduction for simplicity we only speak about the Young graph. Let us briefly indicate the main steps in understanding the Young graph, and recall constructions of distinguished measures on it and related stochastic dynamics. This will provide necessary motivations. We describe our results in Sect. 1.4.
1.1 Young graph
The Young graph originated in the study of representations of finite symmetric groups \(\mathfrak{S}(n)\). The irreducible representations of \(\mathfrak{S}(n)\) are parametrized by \(\mathbb{Y}_{n}\), and the edges in the Young graph come from the classical Young branching rule: two Young diagrams are connected by an edge iff one is obtained from the other by removing one box.
1.1.1 Boundary of the Young graph
Thoma in [91] described normalized indecomposable characters of the infinite symmetric group \(\mathfrak{S}(\infty)\). Earlier this result was independently obtained in a different form by Aissen, Edrei, Schoenberg, and Whitney [1] (see also [22]). It was shown by Vershik and Kerov [94, 95] that Edrei–Thoma theorem is equivalent to describing all coherent systems of probability measures {M n } on floors of the Young graph (each M n lives on the set of Young diagrams with n boxes, and for consecutive n these measures satisfy a certain relation, see (15) in Sect. 4.1). The set of all such systems is convex, and its extreme points (corresponding to indecomposable characters) are identified with points of the infinite-dimensional Thoma simplex
Any coherent system of measures on floors of \(\mathbb{Y}\) is uniquely expressed as a convex combination of the extreme ones, thus yielding a Borel probability measure on Ω. Vice versa, any Borel probability measure on Ω leads to a coherent system {M n } on \(\mathbb{Y}\). It is said that \(\varOmega=\partial\mathbb{Y}\) is the boundary of the Young graph. For more details about the notion of the boundary of a branching graph see [45].
1.1.2 Distinguished coherent systems
The next step in the representation theory of the infinite symmetric group was to find suitable analogues of the (two-sided) regular representationFootnote 2 and decompose them into irreducibles (the problem of harmonic analysis on \(\mathfrak{S}(\infty)\)). This was done by Kerov, Olshanski and Vershik [46, 47]. They introduced generalized irreducible representations of \(\mathfrak{S}(\infty)\) which depend on a complex parameter z. These representations give rise to a one-parameter family of probability measures on Ω, and thus (via the boundary correspondence) to a distinguished family of coherent systems on \(\mathbb{Y}\). The set of parameters for these measures can be extended, and in this way one gets the remarkable z-measures on partitions which depend on two complex parameters z,z′ subject to certain constraints (e.g., see [9, Sect. 1]). The generalized regular representations correspond to the case \(z'=\bar{z}\). The z-measures on partitions are denoted by \(M_{n}^{zz'}\).
1.1.3 Study of z-measures on partitions
The z-measures were studied extensively by Borodin, Olshanski, Okounkov, and other authors. It was shown that these measures give rise to determinantal random point processes on the discrete lattice \(\mathbb{Z}':=\mathbb{Z}+\frac{1}{2}\) and on the punctured real line ℝ∖{0} [9], and their correlation kernels were explicitly computed. These point processes can also be viewed as discrete analogues of the β=2 random matrix ensembles [11]. See [6, 8, 12, 15, 59] for more details.
1.1.4 Stochastic dynamics associated with the z-measures
In the present paper we consider two types of Markov dynamics which generalize known models on the Young graph we are about to describe.
The first model is a sequence of Markov chains on the floors \(\mathbb {Y}_{n}\) of \(\mathbb{Y}\) (i.e., the nth chain lives on Young diagrams with n boxes) which preserve the z-measures \(M_{n}^{zz'}\). One step of the n up/down chain consists of relocating one box in the Young diagram from one place to another. For the Plancherel measures on partitionsFootnote 3 an almost indistinguishable model of down/up Markov chains first appeared in [34]. For the z-measures the up/down Markov chains were the main object of [17], where their asymptotic behavior was analyzed. This led to a family of (infinite-dimensional) diffusion processes on the simplex Ω. In [35] spectral properties of the down/up Markov chains for the z-measures (along with up/down chains for other measures on other branching graphs) were studied.
The second model which we generalize in the present paper is a continuous-time Markov jump dynamics on the whole Young graph \(\mathbb {Y}\). One jump of this process consists of adding one box to the Young diagram or deleting one box from it. This process was introduced in [14]. It preserves a certain mixture M zz′ of the z-measures over the index n, see [9, Sect. 1], and Sect. 4.3. Denote this process (starting from the invariant distribution) by λ zz′(t). It was shown in [14] that this dynamics is (space-time) determinantal, and the dynamical correlation kernel was written out explicitly.
1.1.5 Laguerre and Meixner symmetric functions
Olshanski [67, 68] constructed an orthogonal basis in the Hilbert space \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{Y},M^{zz'})\) of square integrable functions with respect to the measure M zz′ consisting of eigenfunctions of the Markov generator of the process λ zz′(t). This basis is indexed by all partitions. These functions are related to the classical Meixner orthogonal polynomials (e.g., see [48, Sect. 1.9] for definition), and belong to the algebra of symmetric functions [52, Chap. I] suitably realized as a subspace of \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{Y},M^{zz'})\). They are called the Meixner symmetric functions.
In a certain limit transition the dynamics λ zz′(t) becomes a diffusion process living on a cone over the Thoma simplex Ω. The basis of eigenfunctions of the generator of the limiting dynamics is formed by the Laguerre symmetric functions [67, 68].
1.2 Methods for the Young graph
Let us briefly indicate existing approaches to the results cited in Sects. 1.1.2, 1.1.4, and 1.1.5. Then we explain the technique we use is this paper which helps to understand these results from a different point of view, and generalize them to other branching graphs.
The z-measures first appeared from a representation-theoretic construction of generalized regular representations of \(\mathfrak {S}(\infty)\). Then a couple of algebraic/combinatorial characterizations of these measures were suggested in [81] and [10]. In the latter paper other graphs were also studied. For one of the graphs considered in [10] (namely, for the Schur graph, see Sect. 9.6) a construction similar to [81] allowed to define an analogue of the z-measures, see [5].
The first approaches to (correlation functions of) the z-measures (in, e.g., [8, 9]) involved rather direct methods which included inverting certain infinite-dimensional matrices (the so-called “L–K correspondence”, see [9] or [7, Appendix 2]).
The study of the z-measures on partitions and the dynamics λ zz′(t) on \(\mathbb{Y}\) in [14, 15] was done through analytic continuation. It appears that a certain degeneration of the z-measures leads to known and tractable N-particle point processes (namely, the Meixner orthogonal polynomial ensembles) and associated dynamics of noncolliding particles [49]. Then an analytic continuation in the dimension N is performed to obtain properties of the z-measures themselves. This analytic continuation approach is also employed in Olshanski’s construction of the orthogonal basis of eigenfunctions of the generator of λ zz′(t) in [67, 68].
Asymptotic behavior of the up/down Markov chains for the z-measures in [17] was analyzed with the use of the algebra of symmetric functions suitably realized on the Young graph and on its boundary Ω. A crucial role was played by an explicit formula for the action of the Markov transition operator on the Frobenius–Schur symmetric functions on Young diagrams [17, Lemma 5.2].
1.3 \(\mathfrak{sl}(2)\) approach
Okounkov [59] presented another approach to the z-measures. He used the Kerov’s operators which span a certain \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-module. Consider the Hilbert space \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{Y})\) of square integrable functions on \(\mathbb {Y}\) with the inner product \((f,g):=\sum_{\lambda\in\mathbb {Y}}f(\lambda)\overline{g(\lambda)}\). A standard basis for this space is \(\{\underline {{\lambda}}\}_{\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}}\), where \(\underline {{\lambda}}(\mu):=\delta_{\lambda,\mu}\). Kerov’s operators look as [59, Sect. 2.2]Footnote 4
The sums are over all Young diagrams which are obtained from λ by adding or deleting a box □=(i,j), respectively. Here i and j are the row and column coordinates of □. The crucial fact first observed by Kerov is that the commutator H:=[D,U] acts diagonally: \(H\underline {{\lambda}} =(2|\lambda|+zz')\underline {{\lambda}}\), where |λ| is the number of boxes in λ. Thus, the operators (U,D,H) satisfy the \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\) commutation relations:
The z-measures then have the following form [59, Sect. 2.2]:
where Z n are normalizing constants and (⋅,⋅) is the inner product in \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{Y})\).
Kerov’s operators are a powerful tool in dealing with the Young graph and the z-measures. In [59] they were used (together with a remarkable fermionic Fock space structure of partitions) to compute the correlation kernel of the z-measures. Later Olshanski [65] used these operators and the Fock space formalism to obtain the dynamical determinantal kernel of the process λ zz′(t) (this approach was suggested in [14]). A similar approach in the case of the Schur graph (together with its own fermionic Fock space picture) was carried out in [71, 73]. In [17, 70, 72] these or similar operators were used to explicitly compute the generators of the up/down Markov chains on various branching graphs, and obtain infinite-dimensional diffusions as their limits.
Remark 1
It must be noted that the fermionic Fock space methods for the Young and Schur graphs make much use of their fine structure. In the general picture described in the present paper there is no hope of obtaining determinantal or Pfaffian structure as in [59, 65, 71, 73].
1.4 Results
The notion of Kerov’s operators on the Young graph is central for the present paper, and we aim to generalize it to other branching graphs. We start with a branching graph \(\mathbb{G}=\bigsqcup_{n=0}^{\infty}\mathbb{G}_{n}\) (each \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\) is finite, \(\mathbb{G}_{0}:=\{ \varnothing\}\)) whose set of vertices is a lattice of order ideals in some poset, and a triplet of operators (U,D,H) in \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb {G})\) satisfying the \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\) commutation relations (3). For them we retain the name “Kerov’s operators”. See Sects. 2 and 3 for a detailed description of our model. We obtain the following results:
• Any triplet (U,D,H) of Kerov’s operators gives rise to a coherent system (see Sect. 4.1 for the definition) of (possibly complex-valued) probability measures {M n } on the floors of the graph via (4). This system is multiplicative in the sense of [5, 81], see Remark 4(2). Let us assume that each M n is a positive probability measure.
• We find all triplets of Kerov’s operators for various important examples of branching graphs. For the Young graph we reconstruct operators (2) corresponding to the z-measures. We also get all the degenerations of the z-measures in a unified way. Other examples include the Pascal triangle (with measures related to Bernoulli trials with Beta prior), the Kingman graph (with the Ewens–Pitman’s random partitions corresponding to the two-parameter Poisson–Dirichlet distributions [75]), the Schur graph (with the measures introduced in [5]), and the general Young graph with Jack edge multiplicities (with the Jack deformation of the z-measures [13]). We also briefly discuss the \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\) structure of Plancherel measures on rooted unlabeled trees recently studied by Fulman [36]. Thus, we provide a unified approach to several known models.
• The transition operators of up/down Markov chains on the floors \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\) of the graph are expressed in terms of Kerov’s operators. Their eigenstructure is explicitly described. These results are parallel to the work of Fulman [35], but in addition we write down an explicit expression for the action of the transition operators of up/down chains. For the Young graph this is precisely the formula of [17, Lemma 5.2] which helps to study the asymptotic behavior of up/down Markov chains.
• Let M ξ be the mixture of the measures {M n } by means of the negative binomial distribution \(\{(1-\xi)^{c}\frac {(c)_{n}}{n!}\xi^{n}\}_{n=0,1,\ldots}\) over the index n (Sect. 4.3). We define Markov jump dynamics on the whole graph \(\mathbb{G}\) preserving this measure M ξ . The generator A ξ of this dynamics is expressed in terms of Kerov’s operators.
• Our main result is the explicit construction of an orthogonal basis \(\{\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}\}_{\lambda\in\mathbb{G}}\) in \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{G},M_{\xi})\) which provides a diagonalization of A ξ . For the Young graph this basis consists of the Meixner symmetric functions introduced in [67, 68]. We give new proofs to some of the results of these papers. In particular, we manage to establish orthogonality of \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}\) using a construction related to Kerov’s operators.
• The functions \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}\) on the graph \(\mathbb {G}\) arise as matrix elements of the \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-module spanned by Kerov’s operators. This description is parallel to (and, in, fact, a generalization of) the known fact that the Meixner polynomials can be viewed as matrix elements of irreducible lowest weight \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-modules [50, 100, 101].
• In the case of the Young graph with Jack edge multiplicities one gets the functions \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{zz'\theta\xi}\) which are discrete analogues of the Laguerre symmetric functions with the Jack parameter constructed in [21]. These functions \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{zz'\theta\xi}\) live on Young diagrams and cannot be viewed as symmetric functions. In a scaling limit they converge to the functions of [21].
In should be noted that on the abstract level of the present paper some of the results cited in Sects. 1.1.2, 1.1.4, and 1.1.5 are inaccessible, and these problems have to be figured out for each graph separately (see also Remark 1).
1.5 Similar operators
Let us recall other work involving operators on posets and on branching or, more generally, graded graphs which are similar to Kerov’s operators. First example of operators on posets satisfying \(\mathfrak {sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\) commutation relations appeared in [77] (see also the end of [84]). In fact, these operators are precisely the ones corresponding to double degenerate z-measures which live on Young diagrams inside a rectangular shape (see [15, Sect. 4]). Stanley [83] and Fomin [31, 32] independently considered differential posets for which the up and down operators U ∘ and D ∘ satisfy [D ∘,U ∘]=1 (throughout the paper 1 denotes the identity operator). For the Young graph these operators look as
Fomin [32] (see also [84]) generalized these operators to other graded graphs (in fact, the paper [32] deals with pairs of dual graded graphs, see Sect. 3.5) by inserting graph’s edge multiplicities as coefficients in (5). In [32] other forms of commutation relations were also considered. The commutation relations in Stanley’s and Fomin’s papers were used to obtain enumeration results for various posets in a unified manner.
In [35] the commutation relations similar to the ones in [32] were studied, but the up and down operators were probabilistic in nature: certain weights were inserted as coefficients in (5). Fulman used these operators to study spectral properties of down/up Markov chains on various branching graphs including Young, Schur, and Kingman graphs. The operators in [35] are very similar to the ones we consider in the present paper, and our analysis of the eigenstructure of up/down Markov chains could also be deduced from Fulman’s results. However, as in [59], we also make much use of a representation-theoretic intuition which comes from the \(\mathfrak {sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\) structure.
1.6 Organization of paper
In Sect. 2 we describe our main abstract object in the present paper—a branching graph whose set of vertices can be identified with the distributive lattice of finite ideals in a poset. In Sect. 3 we discuss Kerov’s operators on such branching graphs. It turns out that their existence implies that the edge multiplicities of the graph must be self-dual in a sense similar to [32]. Using Kerov’s operators, in Sect. 4 we define distinguished coherent systems of probability measures on floors of the graph as in (4). In Sect. 5 we define relative dimension functions on the branching graph on which Kerov’s operators act in a particularly nice way. This is a necessary step towards the next two sections in which the main results of the paper are given. In Sect. 6 we recall the definition of the up/down Markov chains from [17] and use Kerov’s operators and the relative dimension functions to analyze the eigenstructure of these chains. In Sect. 7 we turn to Markov jump dynamics on the whole graph and explicitly construct the orthogonal basis of eigenfunctions of the generator of the jump dynamics. In Sect. 8 we discuss the degeneration of our picture when the \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\) structure is replaced by the (3-dimensional) Heisenberg algebra structure. This allows to define and diagonalize Markov processes on self-dual branching graphs (in the sense of [32]). In Sect. 9 we briefly discuss how our general technique is applied to various branching graphs including the general Young graph with Jack edge multiplicities (whose particular cases are the Young and the Kingman graphs), the Schur graph, and several other models.
2 Lattices of ideals as branching graphs
2.1 Branching graphs
By a branching graph we mean an abstract graph \(\mathbb{G}\) under the following assumptions and conventions (e.g., see [10]):
• We identify the graph \(\mathbb{G}\) with its set of vertices.
• The graph \(\mathbb{G}\) is ℤ≥0-graded, that is, \(\mathbb{G}=\bigsqcup_{n=0}^{\infty}\mathbb{G}_{n}\), and the endpoints of any edge lie on consecutive levels. Typically, graphs will be infinite, but some examples involve finite graphs for which \(\mathbb {G}_{n}\)’s are empty sets for large enough n.
• All levels \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\) are finite,Footnote 5 and the lowest level \(\mathbb{G}_{0}\) consists of a single vertex denoted by ∅.
• We denote by |λ| the level of the vertex λ, i.e., \(\lambda\in\mathbb{G}_{|\lambda|}\).
• We assume that the edges of \(\mathbb{G}\) are oriented from \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\) to \(\mathbb{G}_{n+1}\) for each n. If (μ,λ) is an edge and |λ|=|μ|+1, then we write μ↗λ or, equivalently, λ↘μ.
• We assume that for any vertex μ there exists at least one vertex λ↘μ, and for any vertex ϰ≠∅ there exists at least one vertex ν↗ϰ. This implies that \(\mathbb{G}\) is connected.
• We are given an edge multiplicity function which assigns to every edge μ↗λ a strictly positive number κ(μ,λ). It should be emphasized that these numbers are not necessarily integers.
• Let μ=λ (1)↗⋯↗λ (m)=λ be an oriented path in \(\mathbb{G}\). Its weight is, by definition, equal to the product κ(λ (1),λ (2))κ(λ (2),λ (3))⋯κ(λ (m−1),λ (m)) of edge multiplicities along the path. By dim(μ,λ) denote the sum of weights of all distinct oriented paths in \(\mathbb{G}\) from μ to λ (all these paths have length |λ|−|μ|). If dim(μ,λ)≠0, we write μ⊆λ. Also set dimλ:=dim(∅,λ); this number is always nonzero. The quantity dimλ can be called the (combinatorial) dimension of the vertex \(\lambda\in\mathbb{G}\). (For the Young graph dimλ actually is the dimension of the irreducible representation of the symmetric group \(\mathfrak{S}(|\lambda|)\) corresponding to the Young diagram λ.) The number dim(μ,λ) is then the relative (combinatorial) dimension.
2.2 Young graph and Pascal triangle
Our basic example of a branching graph is the celebrated Young graph \(\mathbb{Y}\) whose vertices are Young diagrams (we identify integer partitions and Young diagrams as in [52, Chap. I, Sect. 1]). The property μ↗λ for Young diagrams means that λ is obtained from μ by adding one box. The edges in the Young graph are simple, i.e., the multiplicity function is always equal to 1. However, as the running example used throughout the paper we choose a simpler graph, namely, the Pascal triangle. Other examples are considered in Sect. 9.
The classical Pascal triangle (Fig. 1) is a branching graph whose nth level has the form \(\{ (k,l)\in\mathbb{Z}_{\ge0}^{2}\colon k+l=n\}\) and consists of n+1 vertices (on the zeroth level we identify (0,0)≡∅). For any vertex (k,l) there are exactly two vertices above it, namely, (k+1,l)↘(k,l) and (k,l+1)↘(k,l). The edges are simple. The dimension function for is clearly
The description of the boundary of the Pascal triangle is equivalent to the classical de Finetti’s theorem which classifies exchangeable random binary sequences. The boundary of is identified with the segment [0,1] which in our terms means that coherent systems of probability measures on floors of (Sect. 4.1) are in one-to-one correspondence with Borel probability measures on [0,1]. See, e.g., [45] for more details about the notion of a branching graph’s boundary.
2.3 Lattices of ideals
We restrict our attention to branching graphs which satisfy an additional property:
Definition 1
We say that a branching graph \(\mathbb{G}\) is a graph of ideals, if its set of vertices can be identified with the lattice J(P) of finite order ideals of some poset (partially ordered set) (P,⪯) which is called the underlying poset of \(\mathbb{G}\).
See Chap. 3 of Stanley’s book [85] for a background on posets. Let us give necessary comments to Definition 1 and introduce more notation:
• A subset I⊆P is called an order ideal if with any x∈I it also contains all elements y∈P such that y⪯x.
• Finite order ideals form a distributive lattice with respect to the set-theoretic operations of union and intersection. The minimal ideal is the empty ideal ∅. It is identified with the initial vertex \(\varnothing\in\mathbb{G}_{0}\).
• The level |λ| of an ideal λ⊂P is the number of elements in λ.
• The edge μ↗λ between two ideals means that μ is contained inside λ and |λ|=|μ|+1.Footnote 6 By λ/μ denote the set difference of the ideals λ and μ; for μ↗λ we identify the one-element set λ/μ with the corresponding element of P.
• Elements of the poset P will be sometimes called boxes and will be denoted by □. This notation is chosen by analogy with the Young graph.
• The underlying poset is not uniquely defined. In the sequel for simplicity we will always assume that P coincides with the union of all its finite order ideals (minimality). In particular, this implies that P is locally finite (i.e., any interval of the form {z:x⪯z⪯y} is finite).
• A branching graph \(\mathbb{G}\) corresponding to a poset P and having an edge multiplicity function κ will be denoted by \(\mathbb{G}=(J(P),\boldsymbol{\kappa})\). Note that the lattice of ideals J(P) itself can be equipped with a structure of a branching graph; in this case all edges will be simple. We call the corresponding multiplicity function κ≡1 trivial. Any other multiplicity function \(\boldsymbol{\kappa }\not\equiv1\) will be called nontrivial.
Clearly, the Pascal triangle is represented as , where ℤ>0⊔ℤ>0 is the disjoint union (e.g., see [85, Chap. 3]) of two copies of the standard half-lattice (ℤ>0,≤). Any finite ideal in ℤ>0⊔ℤ>0 is characterized by a pair of nonnegative numbers (k,l) and has the form {1,…,k}⊔{1,…,l} (where, by agreement, {1,…,m}=∅ for m=0).
The Young graph \(\mathbb{Y}\) is also a graph of ideals (having a trivial edge multiplicity function). Its underlying poset \(P=\mathbb {Z}_{>0}^{2}\) is the direct product of two copies of (ℤ>0,≤). For (x 1,x 2),(y 1,y 2)∈P one has (x 1,x 2)≤(y 1,y 2) iff x i ≤y i , i=1,2.
3 Kerov’s operators
Here we give the general definition of Kerov’s operators on a branching graph of ideals. Such operators for the Young graph were invented by S. Kerov, and appeared in [17, 59]. Moreover, in [70] (the arXiv “v1” version), [72], and [73] similar operators for the Kingman and Schur graphs were considered, and in [73] (the arXiv version) an axiomatic approach to Kerov’s operators on the Schur graph was suggested. The abstract definition of Kerov’s operators generalizes all these situations.
3.1 Definition
Consider the following basis in the Lie algebra \(\mathfrak {sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\):

In fact, the parameter t can be expressed through the functions u and d on P, which follows from the relation [D,U]=H (see also (14)). Thus, we see that a Kerov’s representation is completely defined by u and d.
Observe that for each Kerov’s representation \(\mathcal{R}\) with functions u and d, the representation \(\mathcal{R}'\) with the functions

Remark 2
Above we have set \(\mathsf{q}(\square)=\sqrt{u(\square)d(\square )}\). By agreement, this means that we choose some branch of the square root for each box □∈P. In fact, the whole picture does not depend on this choice, and it is the function q(□)2 which essentially defines Kerov’s operators.
3.2 Lowest weight \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-modules
Kerov’s representations can be viewed as generalizations of classical irreducible lowest weight \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-modules.
Namely, let P={1,2,…} with the usual order, then J(P) is identified with ℤ≥0 (where 0≡∅). The standard basis in \(\ell_{\mathrm{fin}}^{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{\ge0})\) will be denoted by \(\{\underline {{n}}\}_{n=0,1,\ldots}\). Due to the chain nature of P, it can be readily seen that any multiplicity function on J(P) is equivalent (in the sense of [42], see Definition 5) to the trivial one. We will assume that \(\mathbb{G}=(J(\mathbb{Z}_{>0}),1)\).
Proposition 2
All triplets of Kerov’s operators on \(\mathbb{G}=(J(\mathbb {Z}_{>0}),1)\) are parametrized by one complex parameter t∈ℂ and have the form
This corresponds to \(\mathsf{q}(n)=\sqrt{n(n-1+\mathsf{t})}\) (n=1,2,…).
Proof
This is a classical computation involved in the description of \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-modules, e.g., see [79, Part I]. □
All \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-modules obtained in this proposition have the lowest weight vector 0=∅. For t=0,−1,−2,… one recovers the (−t+1)-dimensional irreducible representation.
Thus, one sees that the general Kerov’s representations on branching graphs arise as natural generalizations of this picture when the underlying poset is not a chain. Of course, for a general graph there is no hope of getting rid of an edge multiplicity function.
3.3 Kerov’s operators for Pascal triangle
Now let us describe all triplets of Kerov’s operators for the Pascal triangle (Sect. 2.2). The underlying poset here P=ℤ>0⊔ℤ>0 is a disjoint union of the posets considered in the previous subsection. It turns out that Kerov’s operators behave nicely under such an operation on underlying posets.
Let us first consider a general situation. Let \(\mathbb {G}^{i}=(J(P_{i}),\boldsymbol{\kappa}_{i})\), i=1,2, be two branching graphs of ideals, and let \(\mathbb{G}:=(J(P_{1}\sqcup P_{2}),\boldsymbol {\kappa})\). Here the multiplicity function κ is constructed from κ 1 and κ 2 in an obvious way. Functions q on P 1⊔P 2 are best understood as pairs q=(q 1,q 2), where q i is a function on P i .

A function q=(q 1,q 2) on P=P 1⊔P 2 defines a triplet of Kerov’s operators on \(\mathbb{G}\) iff for i=1,2 the function q i defines Kerov’s operators on \(\mathbb{G}^{i}\). Moreover, the eigenvalues of the initial vectors are related as

Corollary 1
All triplets of Kerov’s operators on are parametrized by two complex parameters t 1,t 2∈ℂ. The corresponding functions q=(q 1,q 2) on ℤ>0⊔ℤ>0 look as \(\mathsf {q}_{i}(n)=\sqrt{n(n-1+\mathsf{t}_{i})}\), i=1,2, n=1,2,… , and t=(H ∅,∅)=t 1+t 2.
Everything that is said in the present paper about the Pascal triangle readily carries out to its d-dimensional analogue (d times, where d=2,3,…). We classify Kerov’s operators for other branching graphs of ideals in Sect. 9.
3.4 Kerov’s operators and UD-self-duality
In this and the next subsection we work out special features arising for graphs of ideals with nontrivial edge multiplicity functions.
Assume that we have a graph \(\mathbb{G}=(J(P),\boldsymbol{\kappa})\) and a triplet of Kerov’s operators (U,D,H) on it. It turns out that the commutation relation [D,U]=H is very restrictive and imposes a certain condition on the multiplicity function on \(\mathbb{G}\). Namely, fix \(\lambda\in\mathbb{G}\) and consider

This proposition gives a practical tool for finding all Kerov’s operators by solving (13)–(14). For many known examples this leads to a new characterization of distinguished coherent systems of measures, most notably, the z-measures and the two-parameter Ewens–Pitman’s partition structures (Sect. 9). The general construction of measures is explained in Sect. 4.1 below.
3.5 UD-dual multiplicity functions
Most examples of branching graphs with nontrivial edge multiplicities (Sect. 9) come with multiplicity functions which are not UD-self-dual. Before finding Kerov’s operators on these graphs one must find an “equivalent” UD-self-dual multiplicity function to work with. Here the notion related to the duality of graded graphs [32] comes to play.

Proof
As g(λ) (for any \(\lambda\in\mathbb{G}\)) in Definition 5 take the product \(\prod_{i}\frac {\boldsymbol{\kappa}(\lambda^{(i)},\lambda^{(i+1)})}{\boldsymbol {\kappa}'(\lambda^{(i)},\lambda^{(i+1)})}\) along a path from ∅ to λ. It is readily seen from the duality property that this product does not depend on the path (because one path can be transformed into another by a sequence of flips μρν↦μλν along quadrangles (11)). Since \(\boldsymbol{\kappa}'(\mu,\lambda)=\frac{g(\mu)}{g(\lambda )}\boldsymbol{\kappa}(\mu,\lambda)\) for any edge μ↗λ, this concludes the proof. □
A pair of UD-dual multiplicity functions κ and κ′ gives rise to an UD-self-dual multiplicity function \(\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}(\mu,\lambda)=\sqrt {\boldsymbol{\kappa}(\mu,\lambda)\boldsymbol{\kappa}'(\mu ,\lambda)}\). Thus, to study Kerov’s operators on a graph \(\mathbb {G}=(J(P),\boldsymbol{\kappa})\) with a multiplicity function which is not UD-self-dual, one could first find a function κ′ which is UD-dual to κ, and then consider the UD-self-dual \(\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}=\sqrt{\boldsymbol{\kappa }\boldsymbol{\kappa}'}\).

Then by Definition 4 the commutator [D ∘,U ∘] acts diagonally: \([\mathsf{D}^{\circ},\mathsf{U}^{\circ}]\underline {{\lambda}}=h(\lambda)\underline {{\lambda}}\) for some function h(⋅) on \(\mathbb{G}\). The r-duality [32, (1.3.4)] (and equivalent sequential differentiality of [84]) is more special as it requires the function h(λ) to depend on λ only through its level |λ| (cf. the branching of plane partitions, see Sect. 9.9).
Note that our notion of UD-(self)-duality does not require branching graphs to be ideal, i.e., this notion falls into the more general framework of [32].
4 Coherent systems of measures
Here we explain in detail how Kerov’s operators on a graph of ideals give rise to distinguished probability measures on floors of the graph.
4.1 Coherent systems
Let us recall the general definition of coherent systems (e.g., see [17]). Let \(\mathbb{G}\) be a branching graph (not necessary a lattice of ideals) with the multiplicity function κ. Recall that the multiplicity function gives rise to the dimension function dimλ, \(\lambda\in\mathbb {G}\) (see the end of Sect. 2.1).

Down transition probabilities on the graph \(\mathbb{G}\) are defined as

4.2 Distinguished coherent systems obtained from Kerov’s operators

Remark 4
1. Assume that the coherent system {M n } is degenerate. This is equivalent to having q(v)=0 for some v∈P. Set I v :={u∈P:u⪰v}. Clearly, M n (ν)=0 for any \(\nu\in \mathbb{G}\) for which ν∩I v ≠∅. This means that {M n } lives on the lattice of ideals of the subposet (P∖I v )⊂P (cf. how finite-dimensional modules arise in Sect. 3.2). This observation allows to deal only with nondegenerate coherent systems, and in the sequel we assume that {M n } (16) is a nondegenerate coherent system of (real-valued) probability measures on floors of the graph \(\mathbb{G}\).

The measures M n (λ) given by (16), (18) are multiplicative in the sense of [5, 81], i.e., each probability M n (λ) is proportional to (dimλ)2 times a product over boxes □∈λ of values of some function of a box. The papers [5, 81] gave classifications of multiplicative coherent systems on Schur and Young graphs, respectively. In fact (see Sects. 9.4, 9.6), the supply of coherent systems obtained through Kerov’s operators for these two graphs is the same as described in [5, 81]. However, our approach with Kerov’s operators is more unified, is applicable to more examples of branching graphs and seems simpler. It also provides other constructions and results.
3. It is also possible to consider operators spanning an \(\mathfrak {sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-module for branching graphs whose set of vertices is not a lattice of ideals. Such an example is considered in [36], we discuss it in Sect. 9.8. In that case many of the results of the present paper also hold. However, we stick to the formalism of graphs of ideals because it allows to give a unified characterization of several interesting families of measures on various graphs.
4.3 Mixing of measures
Let ξ∈(0,1) and c>0 be parameters. The negative binomial distribution on ℤ≥0 is the probability measure defined as

Assume that Kerov’s operators (U,D,H) on \(\mathbb{G}=(J(P),\boldsymbol{\kappa})\) are such that the parameter t=(H ∅,∅) is positive. Then one can define the mixing of the measures \(\{ M_{n}\}_{n=0}^{\infty}\) (16), (18) by means of the negative binomial distribution π t,ξ (where ξ∈(0,1) is the new parameter) as
where λ runs over all graph \(\mathbb{G}\). The measure M n is reconstructed from M ξ by conditioning on {|λ|=n}.
The idea of mixing of the measures M n comes from the case of the z-measures [9]. A similar construction is the poissonization of the Plancherel measures on partitions [3, 7] (see also Sect. 8). The mixing of measures also can be viewed as a passage to the grand canonical ensemble [93]. The recent paper [18] introduces an object related to the Young graph—the Young bouquet. In that context the appearance of mixed measures looks very natural.
The mixed measures M ξ are preserved by the Markov jump process on \(\mathbb{G}\) we construct below in Sect. 7.
4.4 Application to Pascal triangle
Let us use our description of Kerov’s operators for the Pascal triangle (Sect. 3.3) to see what measures arise for . From (6) and (16) one has the following (complex-valued) measures coming from Kerov’s operators:
where (i.e., k+l=n). Assume that the coherent system \(\{M_{n}^{\mathsf{t}_{1}\mathsf{t}_{2}}\}\) is nondegenerate, that is, t 1,t 2>0. Let us explain the probabilistic nature of the measures \(M_{n}^{\mathsf{t}_{1}\mathsf {t}_{2}}\). Consider the sequence of Bernoulli trials with the probability of success p∈[0,1] having the Beta(t 1,t 2) distribution. That is, p is a random variable with density \(\frac{\varGamma(\mathsf{t}_{1}+\mathsf{t}_{2})}{\varGamma (\mathsf{t}_{1})\varGamma(\mathsf{t}_{2})}p^{\mathsf{t}_{1}-1}(1-p)^{\mathsf {t}_{2}-1}dp\). In other words, one first samples p∈[0,1] from Beta(t 1,t 2), and then samples a binary sequence with probability of success p. Then one readily checks that
The measures \(M_{n}^{\mathsf{t}_{1}\mathsf{t}_{2}}\) describe Bernoulli trials with Beta(t 1,t 2) prior. The Beta(t 1,t 2) distribution on the boundary is exactly the one corresponding to the coherent system \(\{M_{n}^{\mathsf{t}_{1}\mathsf{t}_{2}}\}\), see Sect. 2.2.
Remark 5
Extreme coherent systems on branching graphs (i.e., the ones not expressible as nontrivial convex combinations of other coherent systems) correspond to delta measures on the boundary (see [45]). For , the extreme coherent system corresponding to p∈[0,1] looks as \(M_{n}^{\text{ex},p}(k,l)=\frac {n!}{k!l!}p^{k}(1-p)^{l}\), and can be (pointwise) approximated by the systems \(\{M_{n}^{\mathsf{t}_{1}\mathsf{t}_{2}}\}\) coming from Kerov’s operators (take t 1/(t 1+t 2)→p). This property distinguishes the “small” branching graph \(\mathbb {Pt}\) (and its multidimensional generalization) from “big” branching graphs such as the Young graph, for which only very particular extreme coherent systems can be obtained as limits of the ones coming from Kerov’s operators.
The mixing of the distinguished measures \(M_{n}^{\mathsf{t}_{1}\mathsf {t}_{2}}\) (20) by means of the negative binomial distribution \(\pi_{\mathsf{t}_{1}+\mathsf{t}_{2},\xi}\) simplifies the measures significantly (t 1,t 2>0):
That is, the components k and l of the vertex \((k,l)\in\mathbb {Pt}\) become independent, and we see how the effect of Proposition 3 comes into play. For other graphs the mixing procedure also simplifies the measures. For example, the determinantal/Pfaffian structure of measures and dynamics on Young and Schur graphs is present only for mixed measures and not at the level of the coherent systems {M n } [9, 14, 73].
5 Relative dimension functions
In this section we discuss relative dimension functions on the graph \(\mathbb{G}=(J(P),\boldsymbol{\kappa})\) with an UD-self-dual edge multiplicity function. It turns out that the action of Kerov’s operators on these functions has a particularly nice form.
5.1 Definition of relative dimension functions
Let a ↓k:=a(a−1)⋯(a−k+1) denote the falling factorial power. The relative dimension functions \(\{\mathcal {P}_{\mu}^{*}\}_{\mu\in\mathbb{G}}\) are indexed by vertices of the graph, and are defined as
Here the relative dimension dim(⋅,⋅) is defined in the end of Sect. 2.1. The notation \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu }^{*}\) comes from [10] where it is assumed that these functions form an algebra. The “∗” symbol here does not mean any duality: in concrete examples the “∗” notation marks shifted (or factorial) functions. In particular, for the Young graph the functions \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\) are the shifted Schur functions \(s_{\mu}^{*}\) which are “deformed” versions of the ordinary Schur functions s μ [62]. On our abstract level we do not have any non-shifted functions \(\mathcal {P}_{\mu}\), and deal only with \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\)’s.
The relative dimension functions \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\) have the following properties which are readily checked:

5.2 Linear space \(\mathbb{A}\)
Let \(\mathbb{A}\) denote the linear span of the functions \(\{\mathcal {P}_{\mu}^{*}\}_{\mu\in\mathbb{G}}\) (i.e., the space of finite linear combinations of \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\)’s). This is a linear space, and we do not require \(\mathbb{A}\) to have a structure of an algebra under pointwise multiplication (see also Sect. 9.4.4). Let \(\mathbb{A}_{m}\) be the span of \(\{\mathcal {P}_{\mu}^{*}\}_{\mu\in\mathbb{G}, |\mu|\le m}\), m=0,1,… . These are finite-dimensional linear spaces, and they provide an ascending filtration of \(\mathbb{A}\):
Until the end of this section we fix a triplet of Kerov’s operators on \(\mathbb{G}\). Let {M n } be the corresponding coherent system (Sect. 4.2), and let M ξ be the mixed measure (Sect. 4.3). We assume that M ξ (λ)>0 for any \(\lambda\in\mathbb{G}\), that is, the coherent system is nondegenerate, and also that t=(H ∅,∅)>0. Proposition 6
The space \(\mathbb{A}\) with the linear basis \(\{\mathcal{P}_{\mu }^{*}\}_{\mu\in\mathbb{G}}\) is a dense subspace of \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb {G},M_{\xi})\).
Proof
The proof goes by steps.
1. We first show that the functions \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\) are linearly independent. Consider a linear relation \(\sum c_{\nu}\mathcal {P}_{\nu}^{*}\equiv0\). Let n be the minimal |ν| appearing in this relation. For any \(\lambda\in\mathbb{G}_{n}\), we see by the interpolation property that in the sum \(\sum c_{\nu}\mathcal{P}_{\nu}^{*}(\lambda)\) only the term with ν=λ survives. This implies that c λ =0, and thus all c ν ’s are zero by induction.
2. The functions \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\) separate points of \(\mathbb{G}\) because for any two vertices ρ≠ϰ, |ρ|≤|ϰ|, the function \(\mathcal{P}^{*}_{\varkappa}\) vanishes at ρ and is nonzero at ϰ.
3. Now let us show that each \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\) is square integrable with respect to M ξ . We have

4. Now we can show that the space \(\mathbb{A}\) is dense in \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{G},M_{\xi})\). It suffices to approximate any function F on \(\mathbb{G}\) with finite support by functions from \(\mathbb {A}\). Take N so large that supp(F) lies inside the set \(\mathbb{G}_{\le N}:=\{\lambda\in\mathbb{G}\colon|\lambda |\le N\}\). Let χ N denote the characteristic function of \(\mathbb {G}_{\le N}\). Since (by step 2) one can find \(f\in\mathbb{A}\) with any prescribed values on \(\mathbb{G}_{\le N}\), it suffices to approximate (by elements of \(\mathbb{A}\)) any function of the form fχ N , where \(f\in\mathbb{A}\) and N=0,1,2,… .
We will approximate fχ N by elements of the form \(f \cdot h(\mathfrak{p})\), where h is some polynomial. Observe that by properties in Sect. 5.1, \(h(\mathfrak{p})\in\mathbb{A}\). Let m be the degree of f under the filtration of \(\mathbb{A}\), then

5.3 Action of Kerov’s operators on relative dimension functions
The functions \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\) belong to the weighted Hilbert space \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{G},M_{\xi})\), and Kerov’s operators act in another space \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{G})\). We use the isometry of these spaces:

Then (for identity (24) to be nontrivial) the set difference μ∖λ must consist of one point of P, and in the LHS of (24) there is only one ν such that dim(μ,ν) does not vanish. Also, in the RHS of (24) in the sum there is only one suitable ρ. Note that ν/λ=μ/ρ. Thus, our identity becomes

Remark 6
The papers [17, 66, 70, 72] also deal with the operators acting similarly to U and D in Theorem 2. However, in those papers the “up” and “down” notation was switched. In the present paper we follow the notation of Okounkov [59] for Kerov’s operators.

For the Pascal triangle (Sect. 2.2) one has for two vertices :

6 Up/down Markov chains and their spectral structure
Assume that \(\mathbb{G}=(J(P),\boldsymbol{\kappa})\) is a graph of ideals with a fixed triplet (U,D,H) of Kerov’s operators. Let {M n } be the coherent system of measures on the floors of \(\mathbb{G}\) corresponding to this triplet (Sect. 4.2). As always, we assume that {M n } is nondegenerate, and that t>0.
6.1 Up/down Markov chains
In Sect. 4.1 we have defined two families of Markov transition kernels—\(p^{\downarrow}_{n,n-1}\) from \(\mathbb {G}_{n}\) to \(\mathbb{G}_{n-1}\) (which does not depend on a choice of a coherent system), and \(p^{\uparrow}_{n,n+1}\) from \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\) to \(\mathbb{G}_{n+1}\) (which depends on {M n }). Thus, it is possible to define a family of Markov chains on \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\) by composing “up” and “down” steps: first from \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\) to \(\mathbb {G}_{n+1}\), and then back to \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\). The transition operator of the nth chain is given by
Using the definitions of Sect. 4, it can be readily seen that the chain T n preserves the measure M n and is reversible with respect to it. About up/down Markov chains and similar objects see also [34], [17, Sect. 1], [35].
Observe that \(p^{\uparrow}_{n,n+1}(\lambda,\nu)p^{\downarrow }_{n+1,n}(\nu,\tilde{\lambda})\) vanishes unless either \(\tilde{\lambda}=\lambda\), or \(\tilde{\lambda}\) is obtained from λ by a minimal possible transformation, i.e., \(\tilde{\lambda}=(\lambda\cup \square_{1})\setminus\square_{2}\) for some elements □1,□2 of the underlying poset P. Thus, each nontrivial step of the up/down chain consists of such relocation of a box.
6.2 Up/down Markov chains and Kerov’s operators
Each Markov transition operator T n is acting in the finite-dimensional space \({\mathrm{Fun}}(\mathbb{G}_{n})\) of all functions on \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\). Since the space \(\mathbb{A}\) (Sect. 5.2) separates points of \(\mathbb{G}\), the restrictions of functions \(f\in\mathbb{A}\) to \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\) (denoted by f n ) exhaust the space \({\mathrm{Fun}}(\mathbb{G}_{n})\). Therefore, the action of T n in \({\mathrm{Fun}}(\mathbb{G}_{n})\) is completely determined by its action on \((\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*})_{n}\). The latter action is given by

Remark 7
Formula of Proposition 7 (together with formulas similar to Theorem 2) first appeared for the Young graph in [17, Lemma 5.2] as one of the key ingredients in construction of infinite-dimensional diffusions on the Thoma simplex (1). Similar formulas were obtained in [70, 72] for other branching graphs and were also used to construct infinite-dimensional diffusions.
6.3 Spectral structure of up/down Markov chains
Here we discuss the spectral structure of the operators T n in \({\mathrm{Fun}}(\mathbb{G}_{n})\). It is possible to obtain the results of this subsection using a method similar to [35, Theorems 4.1 and 4.3] (see also [83, Sect. 4], [32, Theorem 1.6.5]) which is solely based on the commutation relations for the operators U and D. Instead, we make use of the algebraic expression for T n (Proposition 7).
Proposition 8
The generator T n −1 of the nth up/down Markov chain on \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\) has eigenvalues \((-\frac{j(j-1+\mathsf {t})}{(n+1)(n+\mathsf{t})} )\), j=0,…,n. The jth eigenvalue has multiplicity \(\#\mathbb{G}_{j}-\#\mathbb{G}_{j-1}\) (by agreement, \(\#\mathbb{G}_{-1}=0\)). In particular, since \(\mathbb {G}_{0}=\{\varnothing\}\), the eigenvalue 0 is simple, and the chain T n possesses a spectral gap.
Proof
The operator T n −1 acts in the space \({\mathrm {Fun}}(\mathbb{G}_{n})\) of dimension \(\#\mathbb{G}_{n}\), and its action is completely determined by (26). By the interpolation property (Sect. 5.1), the functions \(\{(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*})_{n}\}_{\mu\in\mathbb{G}_{n}}\) are linearly independent in \({\mathrm{Fun}}(\mathbb{G}_{n})\), and therefore form a basis of that space.
Let us denote by \(V_{n-1}\subset{\mathrm{Fun}}(\mathbb{G}_{n})\) the linear span of the functions \(\{(\mathcal{P}_{\varkappa}^{*})_{n}\}_{\varkappa\in\mathbb{G}_{n-1}}\). Clearly, \(\dim V_{n-1}=\#\mathbb {G}_{n-1}\). Let W n be any subspace such that \({\mathrm {Fun}}(\mathbb{G}_{n})=W_{n}\oplus V_{n-1}\) (direct sum of linear spaces). From (26) it follows that the action of T n −1 in \({\mathrm{Fun}}(\mathbb{G}_{n})\) is triangular with respect to that decomposition. This implies that T n −1 has eigenvalue \((-\frac{n(n-1+\mathsf{t})}{(n+1)(n+\mathsf{t})} )\) with multiplicity at least \(\#\mathbb{G}_{n}-\#\mathbb{G}_{n-1}\). The rest of the proposition is verified by induction inside V n−1. This concludes the proof. □
It is not clear, however, how to use the technique of the present paper to provide an explicit construction of eigenfunctions of T n −1. It is worth noting that for the second type of Markov dynamics which we consider (Sect. 7) such an explicit diagonalization of the generator is accessible with our methods.
6.4 Up/down Markov chains on Pascal triangle
Consider the nth up/down Markov chain for the Pascal triangle corresponding to the distinguished coherent system \(\{M_{n}^{\mathsf {t}_{1},\mathsf{t}_{2}}\}\) (Sect. 4.4). By Proposition 8, the generator T n −1 has simple eigenvalues of the form \((-\frac{j(j-1+\mathsf {t}_{1}+\mathsf{t}_{2})}{(n+1)(n+\mathsf{t}_{1}+\mathsf{t}_{2})} )\), j=0,…,n, because for this example .
For fixed t 1,t 2>0 the up/down chains on the Pascal triangle converge as n→∞ (under suitable space and time scalings, see [17, Sect. 2]) to a diffusion on the boundary . This diffusion is reversible with respect to the corresponding Beta distribution on [0,1] (Sect. 4.4). In fact, this is the well-known Wright–Fisher diffusion, e.g., see [29] or [28]. Similar convergence leading to diffusions on the boundary holds for other branching graphs [17, 66, 70, 72]. Note that in these papers the boundaries are infinite-dimensional.
7 Markov jump dynamics. Diagonalization of generator
7.1 Markov processes on \(\mathbb{G}\)
Throughout the whole section we fix a graph of ideals \(\mathbb {G}=(J(P),\boldsymbol{\kappa})\) with a UD-self-dual multiplicity function and a triplet of Kerov’s operators (U,D,H). As always, the corresponding coherent system {M n } is assumed to be nondegenerate and such that t=(H ∅,∅) is positive. For any ξ∈(0,1) we define a continuous-time Markov jump dynamics λ ξ on the graph \(\mathbb{G}\) preserving the corresponding mixed measure M ξ (Sect. 4.3). The definition of the process λ ξ follows the construction of Borodin–Olshanski [14].
One starts with a birth and death process on ℤ≥0 with the following jump rates (n=0,1,…):
All other jump rates are zero. The Markov process with jump rates (28) can start from any point and any probability distribution. This process preserves the negative binomial distribution π t,ξ (19) and is reversible with respect to it. By n t,ξ denote the equilibrium version of the process, i.e., the process starting from the invariant distribution. For more detail on n t,ξ see [14, Sect. 4.3], and also [40, 41] for a general treatment of birth and death processes.
Following and generalizing the constructions of [14, 73], we define a Markov jump process λ ξ on the whole graph \(\mathbb{G}\). The evolution of this process goes as follows. The level |λ ξ | of a random vertex evolves according to the birth and death process n t,ξ . If at some moment the process n t,ξ chooses to go one step up (it cannot jump twice at a single moment of time), say, from n to n+1, then λ ξ also goes one floor up in the graph \(\mathbb{G}\). The vertex to which λ ξ jumps is chosen according to the up transition probabilities \(p^{\uparrow}_{n,n+1}({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi},\cdot )\) (Sect. 4.1). Similar thing happens when the process n t,ξ decides to go down. Then the vertex in \(\mathbb{G}\) to which λ ξ jumps is chosen according to the down transition probabilities \(p^{\downarrow}_{n,n-1}({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi},\cdot)\). More formally, the jump rates of λ ξ are as follows (here \(\lambda\in\mathbb{G}_{n}\), n=0,1,…):
All other jump rates are zero. The process with jump rates {Q λμ } preserves the measure M ξ on \(\mathbb{G}\) and is reversible with respect to it. By agreement, let λ ξ denote the equilibrium version of the process. For more detail about the process λ ξ in the case of the Young graph see [14, Sect. 4.4].
Remark 8
The nth up/down Markov chain on \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\) (Sect. 6) can be reconstructed from λ ξ as follows. Condition the process λ ξ to stay in the set \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\times\mathbb {G}_{n+1}\). Take its embedded Markov chain, that is, consider the process only at the times of jumps. This yields a Markov chain on \(\mathbb{G}_{n}\times\mathbb{G}_{n+1}\) which belongs to \(\mathbb {G}_{n}\) at, say, even discrete time moments. Taking this chain at the even moments, we reconstruct back the up/down Markov chain on \(\mathbb {G}_{n}\)with the transition operator T n (25).
7.2 Generator of the Markov jump process
Let A ξ be the following operator acting on the space of finitely supported functions \(\ell_{\mathrm {fin}}^{2}(\mathbb{G},M_{\xi})\subset\ell^{2}(\mathbb{G},M_{\xi})\):

Indeed, recall (Sect. 5.2) that the dense subspace \(\mathbb {A}\subset\ell^{2}(\mathbb{G},M_{\xi})\) spanned by the relative dimension functions \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\) possesses a filtration. By (29), the action of the operator \(\bar{\mathsf {A}}_{\xi}\) in \(\mathbb{A}\) respects this filtration, that is, \(\bar {\mathsf{A}}_{\xi}\) acts triangularly in the basis \(\{\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\}_{\mu\in\mathbb{G}}\) of \(\mathbb{A}\). 7.3 Lifting of \(\mathfrak{sl}(2)\) representation and functions \(\mathfrak{F}_{\lambda}\)

All vectors of the space \(\ell_{\mathrm{fin}}^{2}(\mathbb{G})\) are analytic (see [55]) for the described above action of the Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{su}(1,1)\) in \(\ell_{\mathrm {fin}}^{2}(\mathbb{G})\). Thus, this action of \(\mathfrak{su}(1,1)\) gives rise to a unitary representation of the universal covering group SU(1,1)∼ in the Hilbert space \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{G})\).
Proof
This fact stems from [65] and is established (for the Schur graph) in [73, Sect. 4.2]. The same proof works in our abstract setting. □
Observe that {G ξ } ξ∈[0,1) is a continuous curve in SU(1,1) starting at the unity. In [65] and [73] the above formulas for averages and (34) were used to establish determinantal/Pfaffian structure of dynamical correlation functions of the processes λ ξ for the Young and Schur graphs, respectively. The computations substantially involved Fock space structure of those graphs. One cannot expect such nice structures to appear in a general situation.
7.5 Explicit formula for \(\mathfrak{F}_{\lambda}\), definition of \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}\)

The functions \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}\) essentially arise as matrix elements of the \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-module spanned by Kerov’s operators. When the graph \(\mathbb{G}\) is a chain (and Kerov’s operators span an irreducible lowest weight module, see Sect. 3.2), the functions \(\mathfrak {M}_{\lambda}\) reduce to the classical Meixner orthogonal polynomials \(\mathrm{M}_{n}^{\mathsf{t},\xi}\) (see Sect. 7.7). The fact that the Meixner polynomials can be constructed from irreducible lowest weight \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-modules is known [50, 100, 101]. 8 Remark about Heisenberg algebra operators and Plancherel measures
8.1 General setting
There exists a variation of the setting of the present paper when the algebra \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\) is replaced by the Heisenberg algebra. Namely, assume that we are given a branching graph \(\mathbb {G}\) (not necessary of ideals) which is r-self-dual in the sense of [32], where r>0 is some real constant. This means that the operators U ∘ and D ∘ on the graph defined in Remark 3 (they are constructed using only edge multiplicities) satisfy the commutation relation [D ∘,U ∘]=r 1. Clearly, the operators (U ∘,D ∘,r 1) define a representation of the 3-dimensional Heisenberg algebra in the space \(\ell_{\mathrm{fin}}^{2}(\mathbb{G})\). In many examples of branching graphs considered in Sect. 9, the operators (U ∘,D ∘,r 1) arise as degenerations of Kerov’s operators on \(\mathbb{G}\). Let us indicate which probabilistic models arise from the Heisenberg algebra structure. The proofs here essentially repeat the ones of the previous subsections.

8.2 Charlier orthogonal polynomials
In the case of the chain, one must take the multiplicity function \(\boldsymbol{\kappa}(n,n+1)=\sqrt{n+1}\) (where n=0,1,…) in order for the operators U ∘ and D ∘ to satisfy [D ∘,U ∘]=1 (with r=1). Of course, this multiplicity function is equivalent to the trivial one. 8.3 References
The Plancherel measures on partitions (i.e., when \(\mathbb{G}\) is the Young graph) were studied in several papers including [3, 7, 57, 58, 60]. Plancherel measures on other graphs were studied in, e.g., [54] (Plancherel measures on partitions with Jack parameter for the graph described in Sect. 9.4; they are related to random matrix β-ensembles), [53, 71, 92] (the Schur graph, see Sect. 9.6).
9 Applications of general formalism to concrete branching graphs
In this section we discuss various concrete examples of branching graphs to which the formalism of the present paper is applicable. By \(\mathbb{Y}\) we will denote both the set of all partitions (identified with the Young diagrams [52, Chap. I, Sect. 1]), and the Young graph \(J(\mathbb{Z}_{>0}^{2})\) with simple edges. We start with branching graphs having \(\mathbb{Y}\) as the set of vertices, and after that consider more examples.
9.1 Macdonald (q,t) edge multiplicities
Let Λ be the algebra of symmetric functions [52, Chap. I, Sect. 2]. A distinguished linear basis of Λ is formed by the Schur functions s λ [52, Chap. I, Sect. 3] which are indexed by all partitions \(\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}\). I.G. Macdonald introduced a two-parameter deformation of the Schur functions—the Macdonald symmetric functions P λ (x;q,t) [52, Chap. VI, Sect. 4]. For most values of the parameters (q,t) these functions also form a linear basis of Λ.
There is a Pieri rule which describes the branching of the Macdonald symmetric functions [52, Chap. VI, (6.24.iv)]:

For −1<q,t<1, the numbers κ q,t (λ,ν) are positive for any λ↗ν, and thus they define an edge multiplicity function on the Young graph. In this way one arrives at a branching graph of ideals \((\mathbb{Y},\boldsymbol {\kappa}_{q,t})\). This graph was considered by Kerov [44]. It is also a multiplicative graph in the sense of [10] and [97, 98] corresponding to the algebra Λ with the basis of Macdonald symmetric functions.
9.2 Duality and (q,t)-Plancherel measures

in the polynomial algebra Λ=ℝ[p 1,p 2,p 3,…]. Thus, \([p_{1}^{\perp},p_{1}]=p_{1}^{\perp}p_{1}-p_{1}p_{1}^{\perp}=\frac {1-q}{1-t}\mathbf{1}\). Comparing this with (46) and (47), we readily see that the claim follows. □
We see that the fact that [D ∘,U ∘] is a diagonal operator is an easy combinatorial exercise, but to show that the operator [D ∘,U ∘] is actually scalar requires to use the technique of Macdonald symmetric functions. It seems that there is no direct combinatorial proof of that fact.
Theorem 3 allows to apply the formalism of Sect. 8 and define the (q,t)-Plancherel measures \(\mathsf{Pl}_{n}^{q,t}\) on the graph \((\mathbb{Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{q,t})\) which form a coherent system. One can also consider the poissonization \(\mathsf {Pl}_{\gamma}^{q,t}\) of these measures and introduce a Markov jump dynamics on partitions preserving \(\mathsf{Pl}_{\gamma}^{q,t}\). The generator of this dynamics acts diagonally on an orthogonal basis in \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{Y},\mathsf{Pl}_{\gamma}^{q,t})\) formed by functions \(\{\mathfrak{C}^{q,t}_{\lambda}\}_{\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}}\) given by formula (41) (with quantities dim(μ,λ) and the relative dimension functions \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\) specialized for our graph \((\mathbb{Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{q,t})\)). These functions \(\mathfrak{C}_{\lambda}^{q,t}\) provide a two-parameter extension of the Charlier symmetric functions of [68]. Note that one cannot view the functions \(\mathfrak{C}_{\lambda}^{q,t}\) as elements of the algebra of symmetric functions (see also Sect. 9.4.4 below).
Unfortunately, for general parameters (q,t) the graph \((\mathbb {Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{q,t})\) does not carry any Kerov’s operators: the set of solutions of (13)–(14) in this case is empty. In the next subsections we consider various degenerations of the general (q,t) edge multiplicities. For some of these degenerations Kerov’s operators exist, and we discuss the measures and dynamics arising from the formalism of the present paper.
9.3 Degenerations of (q,t) edge multiplicities
There are various degenerations of the two-parameter Macdonald symmetric functions:

(q=0) Hall–Littlewood symmetric functions [52, Chap. III].

2.
(t=q θ and q→1, where θ≥0 is a new parameterFootnote 9) Jack’s symmetric functions [52, Chap. VI, Sect. 10].

3.
(q=t) Schur functions.

4.
(q=0, t=1) Monomial symmetric functions [52, Chap. I, Sect. 2].
-
5.
(q=0, t=−1) Schur’s Q-functions [52, Chap. III, Sect. 8].
All these families of symmetric functions except for the last one are indexed by all partitions and form a linear basis of Λ. The Schur’s Q-functions are indexed by all strict partitions (i.e., partitions in which all nonzero parts are distinct) and span a proper subalgebra of so-called doubly symmetric functions Γ⊂Λ.
Thus, in the first four cases one gets branching graphs with the underlying poset \(\mathbb{Z}^{2}_{>0}\) and various edge multiplicity functions. In particular, the Young graph with simple edges corresponds to the basis of Schur functions. In the case of Schur’s Q-functions one arrives at the Schur graph. This is the branching graph of ideals with the underlying poset \(\{(\mathsf{i},\mathsf{j})\in\mathbb {Z}_{>0}^{2}\colon\mathsf{j}\ge\mathsf{i}\}\) and simple edges. The vertices of this graph are the so-called shifted shapes which are identified with strict partitions [52, Chap. I, Sect. 1, Example 9].
It turns out that all branching graphs arising in the above degenerations except for the first one (with Hall–Littlewood multiplicities) carry Kerov’s operators. In the next three sections we discuss measures and processes arising in the cases 2–5.
9.4 z-Measures with Jack parameter
The Pieri rule for the Jack symmetric functions P λ (x;θ) [52, Chap. VI, Sect. 10] gives rise to the edge multiplicity function κ θ on \(\mathbb{Y}\) which is defined exactly as in (43) with F q,t replaced by its limit \(F_{\theta}(a,l)=\frac{(a+\theta(l+2))(a+1+\theta l)}{(a+\theta(l+1))(a+1+\theta(l+1))}\). We are assuming that θ>0 is fixed. The edge multiplicities κ θ were considered in [10, 13, 43, 45, 66], and other papers. For θ=1 one has κ θ ≡1, and one recovers the Young graph. The results in that particular case were discussed in Introduction.
9.4.1 Kerov’s operators
Following Sects. 9.1–9.2, we define the UD-self-dual edge multiplicities \(\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta}\) equivalent to κ θ .
Theorem 4
Triplets of Kerov’s operators for the Young graph with Jack edge multiplicities \(\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta}\) are parametrized by two complex parameters z,z′. Each triplet is defined by (9) with the corresponding function q(i,j) on the underlying poset \(\mathbb{Z}_{>0}^{2}\) given by

Proof
Solving (13) for λ=∅, λ=(n) and λ=(1n) (where n=1,2,…), one arrives at the desired expressions (48) for (i,j)=(1,n) and (n,1) for all n≥1. Then, considering all possible rectangular Young diagrams, one checks that (48) must hold for all \((\mathsf{i},\mathsf{j})\in\mathbb {Z}_{>0}^{2}\).
Now it remains to show that (13) is true for any \(\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}\), i.e., to check the following identity (here c θ (i,j):=(j−1)−θ(i−1) is the θ-content of a box □=(i,j)):
This can be checked using the results of [66]. Namely, in [66, Theorem 7.1] certain operators U and D are written as formal differential operators (in the algebra of θ-regular functions on Young diagrams). Arguing by analogy with [66, Theorem 8.2], it we readily see that for those operators one has [U,D]=2θ h 2+θzz′ (in the notation of [66]). Using the definitions of U and D in [66, Sect. 7.1], one concludes that this commutation relation is equivalent to (49). □
9.4.2 Measures \(M_{n}^{zz'\theta}\)
The measures \(M_{n}^{zz'\theta}\) on \(\mathbb{Y}_{n}\) arising from Kerov’s operators via (16) are exactly the z-measures on partitions with Jack parameter θ>0. They were defined in [10, 43], see also [13]. In the latter paper conditions under which \(M_{n}^{zz'\theta}(\lambda)>0\) for all \(\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}_{n}\) are given.
Thus, Theorem 4 provides a new characterization of the z-measures on partitions with Jack parameter together with all their degenerations. See, e.g., [13] for a description of some degenerations for a general θ, and also [15] for discussion of all degenerate series of the z-measures on the Young graph (case θ=1) when they live on Young diagrams with bounded number of rows, or columns, or both (i.e., on Young diagrams inside a fixed rectangular shape).
Note that if one divides both sides of (49) by zz′ and lets z,z′→∞, one recovers the commutation relation [D ∘,U ∘]=1/θ for \((\mathbb {Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta})\). Moreover, as z,z′→∞, the measures \(M_{n}^{zz'\theta}\) converge to the Plancherel measure \(\mathsf{Pl}_{n}^{\theta}\) on the nth floor of the graph \((\mathbb{Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta})\), see Sect. 8.
The paper [66] is devoted to the study of the up/down Markov chains preserving \(M_{n}^{zz'\theta}\), and their asymptotics. In a scaling limit as n→∞, the up/down chains converge to infinite-dimensional diffusions on the boundary of \((\mathbb{Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta})\) which can be identified with the Thoma simplex Ω (1).
9.4.3 Dynamics \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{zz'\theta}\)
Let \(M_{\xi}^{zz'\theta}\) denote the mixed measures for \((\mathbb {Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta})\) as in Sect. 4.3. For θ=1, they form a determinantal random point process [9]. Apart from θ=1, there are two other special cases, namely, θ=2 and \(\theta =\frac{1}{2}\), when \(M_{\xi}^{zz'\theta}\) can be interpreted as a Pfaffian point process [89, 90].
Let \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{zz'\theta}(t)\) be the Markov jump dynamics on the set of all partitions which preserves the measure \(M_{\xi}^{zz'\theta}\) (Sect. 7.1). The Markov generator of \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{zz'\theta}\) acts diagonally in the orthogonal basis \(\{\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{zz'\theta \xi}\}_{\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}}\) of the Hilbert space \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{Y},M_{\xi}^{zz'\theta})\). The functions \(\mathfrak {M}_{\lambda}^{zz'\theta\xi}\) are given by Definition 11 with dim=dim θ , \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\), and q=q zz′θ suitably specialized for our graph \((\mathbb{Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta})\).
9.4.4 Algebraic structure of the functions \(\mathfrak {M}_{\lambda}^{zz'\theta\xi}\)
The functions \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{zz'\theta\xi}\) are expressed through the relative dimension functions \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\) on the graph \((\mathbb{Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta})\). Let us discuss the algebraic nature of the \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}\)’s. From [61] (see also [45]) it follows that these functions have the form \(\mathcal{P}_{\mu}^{*}(\lambda )=({b_{\mu}^{(1/\theta)}})^{\frac{1}{2}}P_{\mu}^{*}(\lambda;\theta)\) for all \(\mu,\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}\), where \({b_{\mu}^{(1/\theta)}}\) is given by [52, Chap. VI, (10.16)].
This implies that the space \(\mathbb{A}\) for \((\mathbb{Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta})\) is the same as the algebra of θ-regular functions on Young diagrams (e.g., see [66, Sect. 6]) which is a filtered algebra under pointwise multiplication. The graded algebra associated with \(\mathbb{A}\) is (regardless of the value of θ>0) isomorphic to the algebra of symmetric functions Λ. For θ≠1 there is no natural way of identifying \(\mathbb{A}\) with Λ. This identification for θ=1 is possible my means of the Frobenius–Schur functions on Young diagrams. This construction is explained in, e.g., [69].
Thus, the functions \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{zz'\theta\xi}\) which diagonalize the generator of the dynamics \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{zz'\theta}\) form a linear basis of the algebra of θ-regular functions on Young diagrams. The functions \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{zz',\theta=1,\xi}\) are the Meixner symmetric functions introduced in [67, 68]. We see that our technique provides a Jack extension of the Meixner symmetric functions of those papers which are, however, cannot longer be seen as symmetric functions.
9.4.5 Limit as ξ→1 and Laguerre symmetric functions with Jack parameter
Let us briefly discuss the scaling limit as ξ→1 of the dynamics and measures for the graph \((\mathbb{Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta})\). This limit is related to the one described in Sect. 7.7.
There are embeddings \(\phi_{n}\colon\mathbb{Y}_{n}\hookrightarrow\varOmega \) for all n∈ℤ≥0 (denoted by ν↦ω ν (θ) in [45]) under which the up/down Markov chains for the graph \((\mathbb{Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{\theta})\) converge to diffusions on Ω [66]. Let \(\tilde{\varOmega}= \varOmega\times\mathbb{R}_{>0}\) be the cone over Ω (see [67, 68] for more detail). Consider embeddings
Under these embeddings, the process \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{zz'\theta}(t)\) converges to a diffusion X zz′θ(t) on \(\tilde{\varOmega}\). This fact for θ=1 is a subject of Borodin–Olshanski’s future paper, and for all θ>0 it can be established in a similar manner.
Consider the following functions of \((\omega,r)\in\tilde{\varOmega}\) indexed by \(\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}\):

The \(\mathfrak{L}^{zz'\theta}_{\lambda}\)’s are eigenfunctions of the Markov generator \(\bar{\mathsf{A}}\) of the limiting diffusion X zz′θ, and \(\bar{\mathsf{A}}\mathfrak{L}^{zz'\theta }_{\lambda}=-|\lambda|\mathfrak{L}^{zz'\theta}_{\lambda}\) for all \(\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}\).
Remark 12
Similarly to [67, Sect. 9], one can separate the variable r in the generator \(\bar{\mathsf{A}}\) and view the diffusion X zz′θ(t) (at least on an algebraic level) as a skew product of the radial part (which is the one-dimensional diffusion with generator (40)) and the diffusion in the simplex Ω introduced in [66].
For θ=1, the functions (50) become the Laguerre symmetric functions of [67, 68]. For a general θ, forgetting about the specialization ψ (ω,r) in (50), we can view \(\mathfrak{L}^{zz'\theta}_{\lambda}\)’s also as elements of the algebra of symmetric functions Λ. Moreover, they form a linear basis in Λ. The functions \(\mathfrak{L}^{zz'\theta }_{\lambda}\) are the Laguerre symmetric functions with Jack parameter introduced in [21].
Let us denote by \(\mathcal{M}^{zz'\theta}\) the scaling limit as ξ→1 (under embeddings ϕ ξ ) of the measures \(M_{\xi}^{zz'\theta}\). Thus, \(\mathcal{M}^{zz'\theta}\) is a measure on \(\tilde{\varOmega}\). The Laguerre symmetric functions \(\{\mathfrak {L}^{zz'\theta}_{\lambda}\}_{\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}}\) viewed as functions on \(\tilde{\varOmega}\) form an orthogonal basis in \(L^{2}(\tilde{\varOmega},\mathcal{M}^{zz'\theta})\), and
The functions \(\mathfrak{L}^{zz'\theta}_{\lambda}\) can be obtained in a scaling limit as ξ→1 from the functions \(\mathfrak {M}_{\lambda}^{zz'\theta\xi}\) on Young diagrams. For θ=1 this is explained in [68, Sect. 4.10], and for general θ this can be done in a similar way, but in the limit θ-regular symmetric functions (elements of \(\mathbb{A}\)) become symmetric functions (elements of Λ). See [45] and [66] for more detail.
9.5 Kingman graph and Poisson–Dirichlet distributions
9.5.1 Kerov’s operators and measures \(M_{n}^{\alpha\tau}\)
Now let us consider another multiplicity function on the lattice of Young diagrams which defines the Kingman graph corresponding to branching of set partitions. As is explained in [45], the Kingman multiplicities can be understood as θ→0 limits of the κ θ ’s from the previous subsection:
where k is the length of the row in ν which contains the box ν/λ, and r k (ν) is the number of rows of length k in ν. The dual multiplicities \(\boldsymbol{\kappa}_{\theta}^{*}\) do not have a limit as θ→0, but if one multiplies them by θ (which leads to an equivalent multiplicity function), then
(we use the same notation as in (52)). It was noted in [42] that the multiplicities κ 0 and \(\boldsymbol{\kappa}_{0}^{*}\) are equivalent. It can be also shown that they are UD-dual. As above, define the UD-self-dual multiplicy function by \(\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{0}:=\sqrt{\boldsymbol{\kappa }_{0}\boldsymbol{\kappa}_{0}^{*}}\).
Theorem 5

Proof
As for Theorem 4, one first verifies that all Kerov’s operators must have the desired form. Then it is not hard to show (it was actually done in [70], the arXiv “v1” version) that (13) holds for all Young diagrams λ. □
The measures \(\{M_{n}^{\alpha\tau}\}\) arising from these Kerov’s operators via (16) coincide with the Ewens–Pitman’s partition structures, see [29, 74, 75], and also [70, Sect. 1.3].Footnote 10 These measures \(\{M_{n}^{\alpha\tau}\}\) satisfy \(M_{n}^{\alpha\tau }(\lambda)\ge0\) for all \(\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}_{n}\) in one of the following three cases:
(1) 0≤α<1 and τ>−α. Then each measure \(M_{n}^{\alpha\tau}\) is concentrated on the whole \(\mathbb{Y}_{n}\).
(2) α=−β<0 and τ=Nβ for some N=1,2,… . Then \(M_{n}^{\alpha\tau}(\lambda)>0\) iff λ has no more than N rows.
(3) α=1 and τ>−1. Then for each n, the measure \(M_{n}^{\alpha\tau}\) is concentrated on a single one-column Young diagram λ=(1n).
We see that our approach provides a new characterization of the two-parameter Ewens–Pitman’s partition structures together with all their degenerations. Moreover [66, Remark 9.12], these measures on partitions can also be obtained from the z-measures with Jack parameter in a suitable limit.
The third (the trivial) case above actually corresponds to the Heisenberg algebra structure on the graph \((\mathbb{Y},\tilde{\boldsymbol{\kappa}}_{0})\). We see that the highly nontrivial Plancherel measures with Jack parameter θ>0 become a trivial object for θ=0.
The scaling limit of up/down Markov chains leads to infinite-dimensional diffusions in the boundary of the Kingman graph \(\overline{\nabla}_{\infty}\hspace{-0.5pt}:= \hspace{-0.5pt} \{(x_{1}\hspace{-0.5pt}\ge\hspace{-0.5pt} x_{2} \hspace{-0.5pt}\ge\hspace{-0.5pt}\cdots\hspace{-0.5pt}\ge\hspace{-0.5pt}0), \sum_{i=1}^{\infty}x_{i}\hspace{-0.5pt}\le\hspace{-0.5pt}1 \}\). These diffusions preserve the remarkable two-parameter Poisson–Dirichlet measures (e.g., see [75] or [30]). In the case α=0 these diffusions were constructed in [27], the two-parameter case was investigated in [70].
9.5.2 Relative dimension functions
It is worth noting that the nondegenerate measures \(M_{n}^{\alpha\tau}\) can correspond to the negative parameter t=τ. However, our considerations of the dynamics in Sect. 7 are only valid for t>0, so from now on we work under this assumption. Let \(M_{\xi}^{\alpha\tau}\) denote the mixture of the measures \(M_{n}^{\alpha\tau}\) (Sect. 4.3), and \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{\alpha \tau}\) be the Markov jump dynamics on partitions which preserves the measures \(M_{\xi}^{\alpha\tau}\).
Let m λ be the monomial symmetric functions
where the sum is taken over all distinct summands. Let \(m_{\lambda}^{*}\) be the factorial monomial symmetric function which is given by the same sum as (54) with each power x k replaced by the falling factorial power x ↓k. Note that each \(m_{\lambda}^{*}\) is also a symmetric function (in contrast to Sect. 9.4.4). We have

9.5.3 Degenerate parameters
Let \(\{\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{\alpha\tau\xi}\}_{\lambda\in \mathbb{Y}}\) be the eigenfunctions of the generator of the Markov jump dynamics \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{\alpha\tau}\). They are given by (suitably specialized) formula of Definition 11. However, these functions can be also characterized in a way similar to [68, Proposition 4.22]. One first needs to consider these functions in the case of degenerate parameters (α=−β,τ=Nβ). In this case \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{\alpha\tau \xi}\)’s become functions in N variables which are indexed by partitions with ≤N rows. Denote \(\mathbb{Y}(N):=\{\lambda\in \mathbb{Y}\colon\ell(\lambda)\le N\}\).

Remark 13
It can be readily verified that the measure \(M_{\xi}^{\alpha\tau}\) for the degenerate parameters (α=−β,τ=Nβ) has the form \(M_{\xi}^{\alpha\tau}(\lambda)={N!}\tilde{r}_{\lambda}^{-1}\prod_{i=1}^{N}\pi_{\beta,\xi}(\lambda_{i})\). This means that the components of a random partition λ=(λ 1≥⋯≥λ N ) with distribution \(M_{\xi}^{\alpha\tau}\) can be identified with the decreasing order statistics of N independent random variables on ℤ≥0 with the negative binomial distribution π β,ξ (19).
The same structure appears in the dynamical picture. Namely, if we consider the evolution of decreasing order statistics of N independent birth and death processes n β,ξ (t) on ℤ≥0 (Sect. 7.1), then we get the dynamics \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{\alpha\tau }(t)\). This can be deduced from Proposition 17 by comparing actions of two generators (of \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi }^{\alpha\tau}\) and of the dynamics of decreasing order statistics) on the functions \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{\alpha\tau\xi}\).
9.5.4 Characterization of \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{\alpha \tau\xi}\)

The diffusion process arising for the multidimensional Pascal triangle (see Sects. 3.3, 7.7) are direct products of copies of the Laguerre one-dimensional diffusion with generator (40). The process X ατ for λ=−β, τ=Nβ can be viewed as dynamics of order statistics of a diffusion coming from the N-dimensional Pascal triangle.
Remark 14
The diffusion process X α=0,τ on \(\widetilde{\overline{\nabla}}_{\infty}\) coincides with the dynamics of ranked atoms of the measure-valued Jirina process (this is a special case of Dawson–Watanabe superprocesses, see, e.g., [20, 25, 39] for definition). For 0<α<1 and τ>0 we thus get an extension of the diffusion X α=0,τ on \(\widetilde{\overline{\nabla}}_{\infty}\). However, it seems that there is no measure-valued process for α≠0 corresponding to X ατ (see also comments after (14) in [82]).
The generator of the process X ατ admits a separation of variables as in Remark 12. This reflects the fact that conditioning the Jirina process to have total mass 1, one arrives at the Fleming–Viot measure-valued diffusion [26].
9.6 Schur graph
The Schur graph \(\mathbb{S}\) is usually defined as the lattice of all strict partitions λ=(λ 1>λ 2>⋯>λ ℓ >0) (where λ∈ℤ) ordered by inclusion. Strict partitions are represented by shifted Young diagrams as in [52, Chap. I, Sect. 1, Example 9]. Two shifted diagrams are connected by an edge iff one is obtained from another by adding a box. Thus defined, Schur graph can be identified with the branching graph of ideals (J(P),1) with the trivial multiplicity function, where \(P=((\mathsf{i},\mathsf{j})\in\mathbb{Z}_{>0}^{2}\colon\mathsf {j}\ge\mathsf{i})\). Note that \(P\subset\mathbb{Z}_{>0}^{2}\) is not a subposet, so the Schur graph is not reduced to a sublattice of the Young graph. We choose another edge multiplicity function on \(\mathbb {S}\) which is equivalent to the trivial one:
The reason is that \(\boldsymbol{\kappa}_{\mathbb{S}}\) is an UD-self-dual multiplicity function.
Kerov’s operators and Markov jump dynamics on the Schur graph were studied in detail in the paper [73]. We refer to it for the characterization of Kerov’s operators. They depend on one parameter a which is assumed to be real positive for the corresponding measures \(M_{n}^{a}\) to be nonnegative. One has \(\mathsf {t}=\frac{a}{2}\). The measures \(\{M_{n}^{a}\}\) on the Schur graph were introduced in [5]. We denote the parameter by a instead of α as in [71–73] to avoid a notational conflict with Sect. 9.5. In [72] a limit behavior of the up/down Markov chains on \(\mathbb{S}\) was studied, it leads to infinite-dimensional diffusion processes on the boundary of the Schur graph which is \(\varOmega_{+}:= \{\alpha\in \mathbb{R}^{\infty}\colon\alpha_{1}\ge\alpha_{2}\ge\cdots\ge0,\ \sum_{i=1}^{\infty}\alpha_{i}\le1 \}\).
By \(M_{\xi}^{a}\) and \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{a}\) we denote the mixed measure and the Markov jump process on \(\mathbb{S}\) constructed from Kerov’s operators. The measures \(M_{\xi}^{a}\) is a determinantal point process on ℤ≥0 [71], and the dynamics \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{a}\) is Pfaffian [73]. The technique of the present paper allows to construct eigenfunctions for the Markov generator of the dynamics \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{a}\).
The relative dimension functions on the Schur graph essentially coincide with the factorial Schur’s Q-functions \(Q_{\mu}^{*}\) introduced in [38]. These functions are symmetric (there is no effect of Sect. 9.4.4), and they span a proper subalgebra Γ⊂Λ of the algebra of symmetric functions, see [52, Chap. III, Sect. 8]. Elements of Γ can be called doubly symmetric functions (the name is taken from [4], see also [72]). They can be characterized as follows [87]. A symmetric function f(x 1,x 2,…) is doubly symmetric iff under the substitution x i =u, x j =−u (where i<j, and u is another formal variable) the function f(x 1,…,u,…,−u,…) does not depend on u. An equivalent description is that Γ⊂Λ is the subalgebra generated by the Newton power sums with odd numbers.
The eigenfunctions of the generator of the jump dynamics \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{a}\) are indexed by strict partitions \(\lambda\in\mathbb {S}\) and look as
Here \(\mathsf{q}_{a}(\mathsf{i},\mathsf{j}):=\{\frac{1}{2}((\mathsf {j}-\mathsf{i}+1)(\mathsf{j}-\mathsf{i})+a)\}^{\frac{1}{2}}\). The functions \(\{\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{a\xi}\}_{\lambda\in\mathbb {S}}\) form an orthogonal basis in the Hilbert space \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb {S},M_{\xi}^{{a}})\), and also a linear basis in the algebra Γ of doubly symmetric functions.
Remark 15
As for the case of the z-measures and the Ewens–Pitman’s partition structures, for the measures \(M_{\xi}^{a}\) there exist degenerate values of the parameter a. These are a=−N(N+1), where N=1,2,… . The degenerate measure \(M_{\xi}^{a}\) lives on shifted diagrams which are inside a staircase shape (N,N−1,…,1,0). Thus, one can define the functions \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{a\xi}\) for these degenerate parameters. It would be interesting to find an expression (similar to [68, Proposition 4.22] and Proposition 18) for these functions \(\mathfrak{M}_{\lambda}^{a\xi }\) on the Schur graph in terms of the one-row functions \(\mathfrak {M}_{(k)}^{a\xi}(x)\).
As ξ→1, the dynamics \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{a}\) converges to a diffusion process on the cone \(\tilde{\varOmega}_{+}\) over Ω +. The limiting diffusion also has Pfaffian dynamical correlation functions [73]. The situation here is parallel to the discussion of Sect. 9.4.5, and leads to the following doubly symmetric Laguerre-type functions:
Here Q μ are the usual Schur’s Q-functions [52, Chap. III, Sect. 8]. The functions \(\{\mathfrak{L}_{\lambda}^{a}\}_{\lambda \in\mathbb{S}}\) form a basis of the algebra Γ. There also exists a measure on \(\tilde{\varOmega}_{+}\) (a scaling limit of the measures \(M_{\xi}^{a}\)) which is an orthogonality measure for the \(\mathfrak {L}_{\lambda}^{a}\)’s.
9.7 Rim-hook lattices
Let us briefly discuss the \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\) operators for the rim-hook lattices which appeared in [59] along with Kerov’s operators for the Young graph.
Let us fix a natural number r≥1. A rim-hook of a Young diagram λ is a skew diagram λ/μ which is connected (the squares of it are connected by common edges) and lies in the rim of λ. A diagram λ is called r-decomposable if one can consecutively remove rim-hooks of length r (r-rim-hooks) from λ and obtain an empty diagram in the end. A diagram λ is said to be an r-core if one cannot remove any r-rim-hooks from it. The operation of adding/removing an r-rim-hook defines a branching of r-decomposable diagrams. Denote the branching graph thus arising by \(\mathbb{Y}^{(r)}\). It can be shown (e.g., see [33]) that \(\mathbb{Y}^{(r)}\) is a lattice which is isomorphic to the direct product \(\mathbb{Y}\times\cdots\times \mathbb{Y}\) (r times). In other words, \(\mathbb{Y}^{(r)}\) is isomorphic to a branching graph of ideals whose underlying poset is \(\mathbb{Z}_{>0}^{2}\sqcup\cdots\sqcup\mathbb{Z}_{>0}^{2}\) (r times) and the multiplicity function κ≡1 is trivial.
Remark 16
The whole set of Young diagrams with the branching defined by removing r-rim-hooks (for fixed r) is isomorphic to a disjoint union \(\bigsqcup_{\text{\scriptsize $r$-cores}}\mathbb{Y}^{(r)}\). For the study of Kerov’s operators it is enough to consider only one component consisting of r-decomposable diagrams.
Using the isomorphism \(\mathbb{Y}^{(r)}\cong\mathbb{Y}\times\cdots \times\mathbb{Y}\) (we say that \(\lambda\in\mathbb{Y}^{(r)}\) corresponds to an r-tuple (λ 1,…,λ r)), one can readily characterize all Kerov’s operators for the lattice \(\mathbb {Y}^{(r)}\). Kerov’s operators \((\mathsf{U}_{r}^{\mathbf{z}},\mathsf {D}_{r}^{\mathbf{z}},\mathsf{H}_{r}^{\mathbf{z}})\) for \(\mathbb {Y}^{(r)}\) depend on 2r parameters \(\mathbf{z}:=(z_{1},z_{1}',\ldots ,z_{r},z_{r}')\in\mathbb{C}^{2r}\) and are defined with the help of Proposition 3 by taking Kerov’s operators for the Young graph with parameters \(z_{i},z_{i}'\) at the ith copy of \(\mathbb {Y}\) (i.e., acting on λ i). On the lattice \(\mathbb {Y}^{(r)}\), the operators \(\mathsf{U}_{r}^{\mathbf{z}}\) and \(\mathsf {D}_{r}^{\mathbf{z}}\) act by adding or removing an r-rim-hook, respectively. One can write formulas for their action, but we omit them (see (57) below for a particular case). Kerov’s operator \(\mathsf{H}_{r}^{\mathbf{z}}\) acts on \(\underline {{\lambda}}\), \(\lambda\in \mathbb{Y}^{(r)}\) as (clearly, r −1|λ|=|λ 1|+⋯+|λ r|)
Now consider the r-rim-hook Kerov’s operators from [59, Sect. 3.5] depending on two parameters z,z′:
where the row and column coordinates (i,j) of a box are defined with respect to the Young diagram \(\lambda\in\mathbb {Y}^{(r)}\). We have removed the factors (−1)ht+1 which are present in [59, Sect. 3.5] because otherwise Proposition 19 below fails. However, these factors could only change signs in certain formulas, and this sign disappears in some of them (see also [59, Sect. 3.5]).

Kerov’s operators on \(\mathbb{Y}^{(r)}\) depending on a parameter z define mixed measures \(M_{\xi}^{\mathbf{z}}\) and jump dynamics \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{\mathbf{z}}\) on \(\mathbb {Y}^{(r)}\). At each jump the process \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{\mathbf{z}}\) adds or removes an r-rim-hook. This process can be viewed as a direct product of r processes on the Young graph corresponding to the z-measures (see Sects. 1.1.4 and 9.4). All properties of \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{\mathbf{z}}\) can be obtained using that fact. For example, the dynamical correlation functions of \({\boldsymbol{\lambda}}_{\xi}^{\mathbf{z}}\) are determinantal, and the correlation kernel has a block form as in [59, Sect. 3.5]. The eigenfunctions of the Markov generator of the jump dynamics look as
where \(\mathfrak{M}^{zz'\xi}_{\mu}\), \(\mu\in\mathbb{Y}\), are the Meixner symmetric functions of [68] (see also Sect. 9.4).
Remark 17
There exists a similar lattice of shifted rim-hook shapes, and it also can be decomposed as a direct product of several copies of the Young and the Schur graphs [33, Theorem 3.7]. This implies that our constructions also work for those branching graphs.
Remark 18
(Slow graphs)
In [99] a graph describing branching of representations of symmetric inverse semigroups was described. This is the so-called slow Young graph which is obtained from the original Young graph by replacing the underlying poset \(P=\mathbb{Z}_{>0}^{2}\) by P⊔ℤ>0. (This procedure can be applied to any branching graph, see [99].) For the graph \(J(\mathbb{Z}_{>0}^{2}\sqcup\mathbb{Z}_{>0})\) one can readily describe Kerov’s operators and the corresponding coherent systems of measures. They depend on three parameters: two of them come from the z-measures on the Young graph, and there is one additional parameter corresponding to Kerov’s operators on the chain J(ℤ>0) (see Proposition 3). It might be of interest to find an explicit representation-theoretic construction of the distinguished coherent systems on the slow Young graph in the spirit of [46, 47].
9.8 Rooted unlabeled trees
Fulman [36] introduced and studied down/up Markov chains on unlabeled rooted trees (as on Fig. 4). The branching here does not define a graph of ideals. However, the model of [36] possesses a \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\) structure similar to that of Kerov’s operators.
Let \(\mathcal{T}_{n}\) denote the set of all unlabeled rooted trees with n vertices.
It is more convenient for us to work with \(\mathbb{T}_{n}:=\mathcal {T}_{n+1}\), n=0,1,… , i.e., to count the number of edges |t| of a tree t. The union \(\mathbb{T}=\bigsqcup_{n=0}^{\infty}\mathbb {T}_{n}\) can be equipped with a structure of a branching graph. If a tree \(t\in\mathbb{T}_{n}\) is obtained from \(t'\in\mathbb{T}_{n+1}\) by removing a single terminal vertex together with an edge, we say that t and t′ are connected in \(\mathbb{T}\) and write as usual, t↗t′. Now we describe multiplicities of edges in \(\mathbb {T}\). Let for t↗t′ denote
Set for t↗t′, \(\boldsymbol{\kappa}_{\mathbb {T}}(t,t'):=\sqrt{n(t,t')m(t,t')}\). We consider the branching graph \((\mathbb{T},\boldsymbol{\kappa}_{\mathbb{T}})\). Though it is not a graph of ideals, it turns out that there are operators on \(\mathbb{T}\) which span an \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-module similarly to Kerov’s operators. The difference is that there is only a single triplet of such operators on \(\mathbb{T}\) and there is no dependence on any parameters.
By [37, Proposition 2.2], the multiplicity function \(\boldsymbol{\kappa}_{\mathbb{T}}\) is UD-self-dual. Define the following operators in \(\ell_{\mathrm{fin}}^{2}(\mathbb{T})\) with the standard basis \(\{\underline {{t}}\}_{t\in\mathbb{T}}\):
Define \(\mathsf{H}_{\mathbb{T}}:=[\mathsf{D}_{\mathbb{T}},\mathsf {U}_{\mathbb{T}}]\). We have (see [37, Proposition 2.2] and [36, (8)]):
Therefore, the operators \((\mathsf{U}_{\mathbb{T}},\mathsf {D}_{\mathbb{T}},\mathsf{H}_{\mathbb{T}})\) span an \(\mathfrak {sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-module in \(\ell_{\mathrm{fin}}^{2}(\mathbb{T})\). The parameter \(\mathsf{t}=(\mathsf{H}_{\mathbb{T}}\underline {{\varnothing}} ,\underline {{\varnothing}})=2\) (where ∅ denotes the tree with only one vertex and no edges). The measures considered in [36] arise from our construction of Sect. 4:

The Markov chains studied in [36] are the down/up chains on \(\mathbb{T}_{n}\). The spectral structure of the closely related up/down Markov chains on \(\mathbb{T}_{n}\) can be read from Sect. 6 (see Proposition 8).
It is possible to define the mixture M ξ of the measures M n and introduce a Markov jump dynamics on rooted trees. Since t=2, the mixing distribution (depending on a new parameter ξ∈(0,1)) looks as
The Markov jump dynamics on all unlabeled rooted trees is defined as in Sect. 7. The Markov generator of this dynamics has eigenfunctions which are explicitly described (Definition 11). These eigenfunctions form an orthogonal basis in \(\ell^{2}(\mathbb{T},M_{\xi})\).
9.9 A remark on plane partitions
Let us mention one important example of a branching graph of ideals to which our technique is not applicable. This is the graph of 3D Young diagrams \((J(\mathbb{Z}_{>0}^{3}),1)\) which are also called plane partitions (e.g., see [64, 86]). The branching here corresponds to adding 1×1×1 boxes to 3D diagrams. There are no Kerov’s operators on it this graph: equations (13)–(14) on q have an empty set of solutions. There is also no Heisenberg algebra structure (Sect. 8) on this graph.
However, there exists a related higher-dimensional structure. Namely, the set of all 3D Young diagrams contained inside a box of dimensions a×b×c parametrizes a basis of an irreducible representation of the Lie algebra \(\mathfrak{sl}(a+b,\mathbb{C})\) (Irreducible finite-dimensional \(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})\)-modules in Sect. 3.2 arise in a particular case a=b=1.) About this structure see [51], and also [78, 88]. It could be of interest to see whether this structure provides any probabilistic models like the measures and Markov dynamics considered in the present paper.
