A nonclassical problem of fracture mechanics for a compressed material with a crack located at a short distance from the free surface is solved. The axisymmetric case for a circular crack is examined. Numerical results (critical stresses corresponding to the initial stage of fracture) for the Treloar material are discussed as an example
