Career development of foreign trained immigrants from regulated professions

Abstract

In this article, we aim to examine and understand the career development experiences of foreign-trained immigrants from regulated professions (FTIRPs) in Canada. To provide some background on immigration in a Canadian context, we focus on a myriad of factors that affect the vocational well-being of FTIRPs. We apply key concepts from several major career development theories to FTIRPs, proposing some general helping strategies intended to empower this population in managing and developing their careers in a new world of work in their host country.

Résumé

Le développement de carrière des immigrants formés à l’étranger dans des professions réglementées. Dans cet article, nous cherchons à examiner et à comprendre les expériences de développement de carrière des immigrants formés à l’étranger dans des professions réglementées (IFEPRs) au Canada. Afin de donner quelques renseignements sur l’immigration dans le contexte canadien, nous nous concentrons sur une myriade de facteurs qui influent sur le bien-être professionnel des IFEPRs. Nous appliquons les concepts clés de plusieurs grandes théories du développement de carrière aux IFEPRs en proposant des stratégies générales destinées à autonomiser cette population dans la gestion et le développement de leur carrière dans un nouveau monde du travail dans leur pays d’accueil.

Zusammenfassung

Berufliche Entwicklung von im Ausland ausgebildeten Einwanderern aus reglementierten Berufen. In diesem Artikel wollen wir die Laufbahn-Erfahrungen von im Ausland ausgebildeten Einwanderern aus reglementierten Berufen (FTIRPs) in Kanada untersuchen und verstehen. Um einige Hintergrundinformationen zur Einwanderung im kanadischen Kontext zu bieten, stellen wir eine Vielzahl von Faktoren vor, die das berufliche Wohlbefinden von FTIRPs beeinflussen. Wir wenden Schlüsselbegriffe aus mehreren bedeutsamen Karriereentwicklungs-Theorien auf die FTIRPs an, um einige allgemeine Unterstützungsstrategien vorzuschlagen, die diese Bevölkerungsgruppe zur Steuerung und Entwicklung ihrer Karriere in einer neuen Arbeitswelt in ihrem Gastland ermächtigen sollen.

Desarrollo profesional de inmigrantes formados en el extranjero con profesiones reguladas. En este articulo, queremos examinar y comprender las experiencias de desarrollo profesional de inmigrantes formados en el extranjero con profesiones reguladas (FTIRPs) en Canadá. Con el objetivo de proporcionar un poco de historia sobre la inmigración en el contexto Canadiense, nos centramos en una miríada de factores que afectan el bienestar vocacional de FTIRPs. Aplicamos conceptos claves de varias teorías mayores del desarrollo vocacional a los FTIRPs, proponiendo algunas estrategias generales de ayuda con la intención de capacitar a esta población en la gestión y el desarrollo de sus carreras en un nuevo mundo de trabajo en su país de acogida.
