The article discusses the results of experimental studies of the velocity of the breakthrough wave front in the lower pool of a hydraulic unit after an emergency partial in width instantaneous dam break and the use of a parameter based on the front velocity to determine the beginning of the formation of a steep breakthrough wave with periodic waves in its body after the dam break.
