Inter-Turn Short Circuit Detection in a Stator Induction Motor Using an External Axial Flux Sensor

  • Published:
Power Technology and Engineering Aims and scope

A technique for detecting inter-turn short circuits in the stator windings of induction motors (IM) using axial magnetic flux as a diagnostic parameter is presented. Fault detection is based on an analysis of the EMF signatures induced by axial flux in a sensing coil located on the motor housing and obtained by means of a fast Fourier transform (FFT). The effectiveness of this method is confirmed by experimental results.
