Flood-Control for Embankment Dams Using a Filtering Spillway

  • Published:
Power Technology and Engineering Aims and scope

The paper provides a brief overview of the use of filtering spillways in road or railway construction and hydraulic engineering projects. The authors consider the construction of flood-control measures for embankment dams, which can be used for in the design of reservoirs that accumulate freshets from the upper reaches of rivers and their tributaries, where flood discharges are less than several tens of cubic meters per second. In order to dispose of such flood discharges, filtering spillways combined with embankment dams are proposed. The article discusses the construction of such dams and presents formulas for determining the discharge capacities of filtering spillways. Recommendations for their use on embankment dams with a screen and a core are given.
