Performance of a Steam Pipeline with Defects in Knot Welded Joints

  • Published:
Power Technology and Engineering Aims and scope

The analysis of the possibility of temporary operation of a steam pipeline with defects in knot welded joints was performed on a specific example. Based on the conservative approach, the tensile stresses in the working sections of the pipeline were determined and the stress intensity factors for crack-like defects oriented in the circumferential direction along the knot joints were calculated. It is shown that the loss of the bearing capacity of the pipeline with defects by the mechanism of exhaustion of brittle strength is excluded. The allowable sizes of crack-like defects in the zones of welded joints were determined by calculation based on the characteristics of plastic limiting states. Using a special technique, the time period of temporary safe operation of a pipeline with crack-like defects until it was taken out for repair was calculated.
